White Sox Fighting Rays and History

We do a little thing on our morning show every morning at 7:10 called "This day in history" where we recite the days historical events and celebrity birthdays.  October 6th is a day that absolutely sucks.

In the middle east, it's been know for the start of a war (1973) and the assassination of Anwar Sadat (1981).

The birthday list on this day is a collection of has beens and never weres. Britt Ekland? Fred Travalena?  Jeremy Sisto? The most famous birthday on this day is Kevin Cronin of REO Speedwagon.  Some born on this day met with tragady like actress Carole Lombard, who died in a fiery plane crash in 1942. If this is your birthday, I suggest you pull the covers back over your head and go back to sleep in embarrassment.

For White Sox fans, this is also a lousy day in history.  The Sox have never won a playoff game on this date (yes, I know they won game five of the 1959 World Series on this day 1-0, but that isn't the playoffs, is it?)
  • In 1983, after winning the first game of the series against Baltimore, the Sox were shut out by Mike Boddicker 4-0. They would go on to lose the next two games (the ALCS was best of five back then) including Eddie Murray's game three grand slam off of Richard Dotson and the famous 3-0 ten inning clinching game four where Tony The Useless left Britt Burns in one inning too long.  Baltimore would win the World Series that year.
  • In 1993, Toronto went up two games to none in the ALCS with a win at U.S. Commiskey Park.  The Sox would win a couple of games in Toronto but eventually lose the series 4 games to 2.  Toronto went on to beat the Phillies in the World Series that year on Joe Carter's walk off home run off of Mitch Williams.
  • In 2000, the Seattle Mariners completed a sweep of the White Sox with a 2-1 victory in Seattle. The M's were managed by some guy named Piniella who lost to some guy named Torre in the next round.
  • In the year of our destiny, 2005, the Sox were OFF on October 6th.
So, there are a lot of demons to exercise this afternoon.  Still there is cause for optimism:

  • Gavin Floyd has been the Sox most consistent pitcher all year.  It's nice to know you can trot out an All-Star like starter in game four.
  • Andrew Sonnanstine counters for Tampa.  He's been fairly tough on the Sox thanks to his offspeed stuff.
  • The Sox made some things happen on the bases yesterday.  As long as they continue to play like they are desperate, they have a chance.
  • DeWayne Wise and Junior had big hits yesterday.
  • A.J. is smokin' hot right now
  • If Dye, Thome and Paulie could have one big game, this would be the one.
  • The Sox bullpen has looked good in this series.  That was my biggest worry going into this series.
