Crystal Ball: What White Sox Need in 2009

Yeah, okay, I know the body isn't even cold yet and we're not even done with the playoffs or the world series, but it is time to think about 2009 for White Sox fans since baseball is now dead to us.

Kenny Williams says he started formulating his 2009 plan three months ago.  He also says there will be no big spending spree.

With that in mind, Kenny, here's a little help to get you rolling in the right direction, although you don't really need it:

  • 1b-I love Paul Konerko, but he's killing the Sox in so many ways.  If there is a way to ship him off to the Angels, D-Backs or Dodgers, make it so.  Nick Swisher is better defensively and hopefully, Greg Walker can solve the hole in his swing.  Chances are with Konerko's contract, it will be impossible to move him.  Besides, when you give the final out ball of the 2005 world series to the Chairman, you are probably around for life. So, now you have to ask yourself, does that make Nick Swisher trade bate?
  • 2b-I'd really like to see the White Sox give Chris Getz a shot.  He adds a lot to the team in terms of speed and perhaps small ball ability.  I think he could turn into what Tad Iguchi was in 2005, something the Sox sorely lacked in 2008.  Jason Bourgeois may fit that bill.
  • SS-Sold to the Cuban Missile.
  • 3b-I'm pretty sure the Sox will give Josh Fields a chance to play third every day.  He still can't go to his left and I wonder about his ability to hit as an everyday player.  Personally, I wish they would trade him and pick up someone else.
  • Lf-Q.
  • Cf-This is an area sorely need of upgrade.  Someone who can hit for average and has a ton of range defensively.  It's not BA and it sure as heck isn't Jerry Owens.  If you look at the free agents, the only one that really makes you say "hmm" is Rocco Baldelli.  I think this is where Kenny makes the big deal for someone like Coco Crisp.
  • Rf-JD
  • C-A.J.
  • Bench: I hate to admit it, but I'd take back Juan Uribe and Toby Hall.  I'd also take BA and DeWayne Wise and maybe another utility infielder.
  • DH-Thome unless they dump him and move Paulie to DH.  Personally, I think it will be Thome.
  • Starters-Mark Buehrle, John Danks and Pink Gavin Floyd at the big three.  Clayton Richard is probably your fifth starter.  Javy Vazquez, despite the desire of fans and probably teammates will most likely continue his career with the Sox next season.  The key is having four solid pitchers around him so he feels no pressure.  One also wonders if Jose Contreras can come back late in the year and contribute, most likely from the bullpen.
  • Bullpen-The core is okay.  Jenks, Linebrink, Dotel and Thornton are all quality pitchers. I also like Adam Russell. The rest of them, I wouldn't give you a nickle for.  If Kenny upgrades here, hope he no longer goes after refugees from the Royals.  The Sox really need a couple of dependable long guys.  Is Luis Vizciano available?
