College Football Saturday: Cosmic Tumblers Go Right Off The Rails

What a day of college football.  The good thing for teams like Oklahoma, Missouri and LSU is that they lost on the second weekend of October and have plenty of time to go to the back of the line and still make the BCS championship game.  At this point, it is doubtful there will be an undefeated national champion.

Don't Get Upset

  • Texas 45 Oklahoma 35-OU had chance after chance, but Texas played surprisingly good defense and Colt McCoy was a cold blooded leader.  OU also got hurt (no pun intended) losing linebacker Ryan Reynolds.  Chris Ogbannaya's 63 yard run sealed the deal.  The Longhorns have another tall order next week in Missouri while the Sooners try to climb back up the charts against Kansas.
  • Florida 51 LSU 21-Florida sends a loud and clear message that there may be a new sheriff in town in the SEC.  The biggest benefactor of this blowout was Alabama, who, by being off yesterday, now has a one game get out of jail free card in the SEC West.  They may need it later this year when they play LSU.  BTW, beware Florida's running game.  It's creative and fast.  Florida takes a week off to rest before playing a solid Kentucky squad while LSU travels to Charleston to meet up with the Head Ball Coach.
  • Oklahoma State 28 Missouri 23-The Cowboy defense was successful in shutting down one of the most prolific offenses in the country.  Chase Daniel probably wants to burn that 25 jersey he wore last night in tribute to a fallen teammate.  He had a tough, tough night.  It will be interesting to see what kind of day he has against Texas next week.
  • Mississippi State 17 Vanderbilt 14: Congratulations, Vanderbilt, you've been Croomed.  Every year, Sylvester Croom has just enough upsets and wins just enough games to keep his job.  Here's one upset, although this one wasn't a shocker.
  • Arkansas 25 Auburn 22-A couple of years ago, Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino was almost handed the keys to the Auburn program on a runway in Kentucky.  You wonder if they wish they would have pulled it off after a huge win for Arkansas and another crushing defeat for Auburn.  Unfortunately for Tommy Tuberville, Tony Franklin isn't around to blame this week.
  • Toledo 13. Michigan 10 -They say you have to hit rock bottom before you can head to the top.  For Michigan, losing to a MAC school at home is rock bottom.  All those people who forced Lloyd Carr out last year are just scratching their heads and wishing Les Miles would have taken the job.

Close But No Cigar

  • Texas Tech 37 Nebraska 31 (OT)-Memo to #7 Texas Tech.  If you want to compete with the elite teams in your conference, you'd better learn to play some defense, especially against a weak sister like Nebraska.  Oh wait, this has always been your problem, hasn't it?

The Way It Should Be

  • Penn State 48 Wisconsin 7-In one of the few cases where a ranked team performed that way it should have, Penn State went into Madison and dominated Wisconsin in every aspect of the game.  Just schooled them.  This no doubt will be reflected in this week's voting.
  • Georgia 26 Tennessee 14-This game was a disappointment in a sense.  Georgia came out, took a huge lead and then almost coughed it up.  Mark Richt's team is going to need a lot more killer instinct if it expects to get past Florida and LSU.
  • BYU 21 New Mexico 3-This time of year, most teams have plenty of films of the teams that are offensive juggernauts and can slow them down a bit.  BYU seems like it is falling into this situation.  BYU is heading towards an end of season showdown against a pretty good Utah team.
  • USC 28 ASU 0-A solid win for Pete Carroll's squad, probably enough of one to get them moving up in the polls. In fact, USC should run the table between now and the end of the season and a few more dominating wins like this could get them back near the top, provided the Big 12 teams keep beating each other up/
  • Ohio State 16 Purdue 3-Ohio State wins a game they should have.  It may not move them up the rankings much, but if they can run the table in the Big Ten, they have a chance at a pretty good bowl game.  There is little doubt those extra BCS bids will come out of the Big 12 and SEC this year unless something goes horribly wrong. The big game circled on OSU's calendar isn't Michigan, it's the October 25th game against Penn State.
  • Utah 40 Wyoming 7-Utah did it right by crushing hapless Wyoming. If you are a decent team from a lousy conference, you have to beat up weaker opponents to make the voters notice.
  • Kansas 30 Colorado 14-Kansas does a nice job of coming from behind.  I am disappointed as I expected more out of Colorado this year.  Kansas has a long road to hoe if they want to get back in the top 10.  Still on their schedule: Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Texas and Missouri.  It looks like Mark Magino's squad will be spoilers this year.
