Brewers Macha Mistake
In what appears to be a Chicago election, multiple sources are reporting that Ken Macha will be named shortly as the new manager of the Milwaukee Brewers.General Manager Doug Melvin interviewed only three other candidates for the job besides Macha; interim manager Dale Sveum who had no chance to get the job; former Mets skipper and devote of Dr. Heimlich Willie Randolph, who was interviewed because he had to be and Cubs broadcaster Bob Brenly.
As badly as Brenly may want to put on a uniform again, he certainly can choose his next situation carefully. And, in this situation, Brenly would have had to adopt at least three coaches from Yost's staff instead of bringing in his own crew. That and he has a lucrative three year contract with the Cubs right now.
That leaves Macha, Melvin's original choice a few years ago when he hired the now departed Ned Yost.
Macha has the reputation for being a solid baseball man but a lousy communicator. In fact, I think Macha is Yost on Valium.
Sure, Macha had a winning record with the A's, but his relationship with this team is key. There were others out there that may have fit the situation better, but Melvin chose to go with Macha.
Macha will inherit a team that made the playoffs in 2008, but will most likely lose pitchers C.C. Sabathia and Ben Sheets and possibly trade first baseman Prince Fielder.
