Dye May Be Cast For White Sox Improvement

It's all just rumors right now, but reports indicate that the White Sox may part with outfielder Jermaine Dye in order to add more speed to their plodding lineup.

The rumor mills also indicate that White Sox GM Kenny Williams had heard from teams interested in talking about closer Bobby Jenks.

I'm not sure that Dye is the guy I want to trade.  Sure, he's a little older and a little slower than when he arrived on the South Side in 2005, but I think he's got a couple years of useful play left in him.  Certainly, if the Sox wanted to trade one of their sluggers, the guy who stands out is Paul Konerko, but with his no-trade protection and declining skills, he would be hard to move.

So, is this some insight into Kenny Williams plan?  Will Nick Swisher be moved to right field (or perhaps Carlos Quentin who has a much better arm) and Dye shopped for a center fielder, the biggest pressing need this team has moving forward?

It's become apparent that Swisher isn't going anywhere.  He's just not going back to center field.

The worst case scenario is that Kenny Williams doesn't make a deal and Jerry Owens gets another shot at center field.  This would be a huge mistake and if someone were willing to take Owens (and for that matter Boone Logan) for a bag of used baseballs, I would make the deal immediately.

As it stands right now, it's not impossible to keep Dye.  You'd have to give up some younger players and perhaps a pitcher of the future (Lance Broadway fills this role nicely) to get a center fielder with a decent on base percentage who can steal bases.  He'd also have to cover parts of left and right to make up for the Sox slow outfielders.

This way, you can keep Swisher in a Ross Gload type of role, providing breaks for Dye, Quentin, Konerko and Jim Thome.  In fact, given the medical histories of Dye, Quentin and Thome, having Swisher as a super backup makes a lot of sense.  Brian Anderson could also fill the role as a backup outfielder.

As far as Jenks is concerned, I wouldn't even think about moving him.  He's still a top closer and those are hard to find.  If you don't believe me, ask the Brewers or Cubs.  Besides, who would you replace him with?  Matt Thornton has fatigue issues, Scott Linebrink is fragile and Octavio Dotel is about as reliable as the Cubs winning the pennant. Unless the Sox come up with someone capable of closing, it's better to leave well enough alone.
