Random Shots: Just One More Thing, Sir Edition
Random shots while wondering whatever happened to Bee Bee Richard:
Many of you never heard of Herb Score, who died this week, but he had quite a story. Hit in the face by a line drive off the bat of Gil McDougald in 1957, Score never was the same pitcher that won the 1955 rookie of the year award. Yet he went on to pitch for the White Sox and have a long career as an Indians announcer. He had been in declining heath the last several years which included both a car crash and a stroke. It takes cahones the size of watermelons to go back out on the mound after somebody has nearly blinded you with a line drive to your face. Herb Score was a hero in my book.- I know this Cuban third baseman is supposed to be good, but the Sox really need a center fielder. Does Fidel have any of those in stock? (Sox Machine)
- I hope White Sox bench coach Joey Cora gets the manager job in Seattle. He's earned it.
- Former Raider Coach Lane Kiffin has talked to Clemson about their open coaching position. Two words, guys. Bill Callahan. Besides, since Clemson isn't going to pay anyone, that job will most likely go to an assistant who will use it as a stepping stone to the Big Ten, SEC or Big 12.
- The Chicago Blackhawks retired the number 3 last night in honor of both Pierre Pilote and Keith Magnuson. I'm too young to remember Pilote, who left the Hawks in 1968. But I remember Maggie. Worst fighter ever. The guy wouldn't back down to anybody and usually wound up getting pounded. But he had a great heart. Sadly, he died in a car crash involving a friend driving while drunk.
- Larry Harris, a terrific guy, has found a new NBA gig with Golden State. Larry was great to us when he was GM of the Bucks and I was PD of one of Milwaukee's sports stations. He even did a Larry Harris show, where he answered questions from callers. Glad to see Larry back at work.
