College Football Friday

It was a spirited slate of games yesterday, post turkey:

  • The most important game of the day Friday was Texas vs. Texas A&M.  The Longhorns sent their message and held their serve, now it's up to Oklahoma to send theirs tonight against Oklahoma State.  An OU win of large proportions will smoke the BCS computers.
  • Pittsburgh fans must go insane with the inconsistency of their team.  Here's a team that couldn't beat Rutgers and Cincinnati, but took out West Virginia (again).  Wanny, you sure make it interesting.
  • How far has LSU fallen?  Losing their fifth game of the year (the most for a championship team since 1984) and going 2-5 in the SEC.  Somewhere, Ryan Perrilloux is having a glass of Jack, huffing a bong  and smiling a big smile.
  • LSU could probably use a little Bo Pelini, who obviously has an angel on his shoulder who kicked a 57 yard field goal.  At 8-4, Bo has Nebraska on the road to redemption in his first season.  Meanwhile, does yesterday's loss and a five win, non-bowling season mean the end for Dan Hawkins?  Truth be told, injuries killed the Buffs this year.
  • It's really too bad the Big Conferences own the BCS.  Because Boise State can ply with just about anyone.  And what a great gesture from their coach.  Chris Petersen is a good and decent man and loves where he is.  Name five more college football coaches like that not named Paterno.
  • Pick six.
  • Top matchups today include the Arn Bowl.  I think the outcome is no in doubt, but more importantly, if Tommy Tuberville's streak of six straight over Bama ends today, does he have a leg to stand on with the administration and trustees to keep his job, or does Auburn became a scene out of  "Goodfellows" with Lowder taking Tuberville to a swamp in the trunk of his car.
  • The Tennessee choice of Lane Kiffin is a curious one, but it seems that among those asked, he was the only one who wanted the job or he was the only one immediately available for the job.  UT was already told no by David Cuttcliffe and Butch Davis and Brian Kelly won't be available for a few weeks, so Kiffin became the most viable.  However, this is much more like Bill Callahan than it is Pete Carroll.  And, if everyone is excited about Lane's dad Monte joining the band, that's a real slap in the face of John Chavous who has been an outstanding defensive coordinator at Tennessee forever and deserves praise.  This program isn't broken, it's just not been able to recruit a decent quarterback.  I think Lane Kiffin comes in and trashes it, but in the SEC East, the luxury is you always have Vandy and Kentucky to help lift you up.  One other thought: If Kiffin can't hack Al Davis, how will he deal with the pressure of coaching in the SEC?  Seriously? UT fans are going to be trapped in a big game of "be careful what you wish for" and somewhere, out on a lake or in a TV studio, Phillip Fulmer will be laughing his ass off.
