College Football Saturday: Good Night and Good Luck Phil Edition

Some observations from a day spent in front of the TV, listening to Princess cuss out Auburn:

  • I have a soft spot for Phil Fulmer.  When I worked in sports radio in Nashville, he was always really good to us.  And now, sadly, he's gone.  You can tell how proud he is of his UT experience and what a classy individual he is at what must be a horrible time for him. I don't know if he'll ever coach again, but I think he might, given the right situation.  I'm glad he went out a winner last night. As someone said on TV last night, "you're Phillip Fulmer and you don't have to do anything you don't want to."  And for all of you Vol fans that are celebrating his head on a stick, good luck, because it will get worse before it gets better.  Lane Kiffin is a lot of things, but he is not Nick Saban. • Same thing for you, Mississippi State.  Sure, Houston Nutt turned Ole Miss around, but Sylvester Croom did one very important thing for your program: He played clean and got you out of trouble with the NCAA and he was, like Fulmer, a class act.  Tommy Bowden will do well at MSU where they get elated just going to a bowl game. Besides that, I loved having the word "Croomed" as part of the lexicon.  Here's another take on Croom.  (Larry Brown Sports)
  • A couple of MAC coaches got fired yesterday, at Miami and Bowling Green.  Boy, how bad do you have to be to get fired in the MAC?
  • Alabama tuned up Auburn 36-0 and exercised the ghosts of the last six years.  Good luck with Florida, St. Nick.  You are going to need it.
  • Florida sets up it's date with Bama by beating down Florida State.  Urban Meyer has his team peaking at the right time.  I, for one, would love to see Oklahoma vs. Florida for the national championship, just to see if the scoring would hit three digits.
  • Oklahoma wins the big one.  The second half of this game was awesome, especially Sam Bradford giving his body up like he did for the "helicopter touchdown."  I can't help but think that putting up 61 points on the road against the number 12 team in the country is enough to get you past Texas, even though Mack Brown is very ticked off right now (and should be.)
  • I love Paul Johnson.
  • Notre Dame doesn't get a first down until the end of the third quarter last night against USC.  Sorry Charlie.  BTW, USC still has a faint pulse for the big game, but next week is going to have to be very strange.
  • Pete Carroll is busy sending a thank you card to the Ducks.
  • Dabo, whoa-oh-oh-oh.... He's for the money, he's for the show Dabo's a-waitin' for another go . .
  • Va Tech moves on to the ACC championship against Boston College.  It's sad one of these two teams will occupy a BCS slot when Boise State or Ball State, a couple of teams that could compete with them, have to sit on the outside looking in.  What's even sadder is that Georgia Tech isn't going to this party because right now, they are the best team in this league.
  • Brian Kelly will be no where near Cincinnati next year, so enjoy it while it lasts Bearcat fans.
