College Football Saturday: Did You Get The Number Of The Truck That Just Hit Us Edition
Thoughts and comments about the final regular season Saturday in college football. Damn, now what am I going to watch?
Certainly no surprise to anyone, Oklahoma's brutal beating of Missouri propels them to Miami and a date with Florida. USC, Texas and Alabama, thanks for playing.- USC made it as far as the Rose Bowl, but lost their talented offensive coordinator in the process.
- Did you watch the ACC championship game? Neither did anyone else.
- It must be life altering to know after a season of sweat, hard work, sacrifice, 18 hours days etc., that at the end of the day, you get to go to the Liberty Bowl. The good news for Skip Holtz is that he is "upgrade eligible" and will probably be able to parlay yesterday's win into a nice, well paying gig at a school in a conference that matters. Okay, maybe the Big East.
- The hottest coach in the country may be Brain Kelly who continues to produce miracles like the one last night in Honolulu. I don't believe him when he says he is staying where he is unless he has convinced himself his class next year is better or there is no situation available this year he wants. That could change if some of these other coaches at the bigger schools make a move.
- Congrats to Davewood Bumstedt who is headed to the Sun Bowl. Not bad when you consider that he started out this year with a loss to Bowling Green, a MAC team that fired their coach at the end of the season. Good thing for Davewood he coaches in the Big East and not the Big 10, Big 12 or SEC.
- On the coaching carousel: Fresno State coach Pat Hill is staying put for now. Hill was considered for the Washington gig. Hill might be able to get a conference bump if someone in a conference like the ACC or Big East goes to the Big 12 or the SEC.
- He's a man and he's forty-one and he and his mother of children aren't going anywhere. Mike Gundy gets a raise and an extension at Oklahoma State. Gundy will never leave OSU as it is his his alma mater and as long as he puts out for T. Boone Pickens, he has no facilities issues.
- Mike Leach and Texas Tech may be close to a contract extension. Thing is, Leach doesn't seem like a very hot candidate right now., so this may be the deal he has to take.
- Here's the interesting thing about Boise State Coach Chris Peterson: He may actually like his job so much and may not want to uproot his family, that he will stay at Boise State for many years to come. Integrity over ambition, greed and job lust is a rare commodity these days and Coach Peterson should be applauded.
- Jimbo Fisher is smart enough to know that it isn't worth $5 million to coach at Auburn.
- Auburn is still looking although few of the candidates mentioned are viable and I believe obtainable. The linked story quotes "a person with knowledge of Auburn’s thinking." Must be one of Bobby Lowder's family members.
- You wonder if Lane Kiffin is getting buyer's remorse?
