What Now For Tim Tebow?

In a surprise to no one living outside of Armore, or Oklahoma City, Florida beat back Oklahoma to win the BCS championship game last night.  There is no doubt that Florida is the best team in the country and their quarterback, Tim Tebow is the reason why.

Tebow didn't get the props this year that he did last year thanks to Florida's one loss season and the explosion of quality quarterbacks in the Big 12.  But when it came down to the two biggest games of the year, Tebow was there front and center leading the Gators to victory.

With two national championships in three years, Tebow has nothing left to prove in college football and should rightfully take his place in the 2009 NFL draft.

The NFL grave yard is littered with the bones of Florida quarterbacks who were great in college but stiffed in the NFL.  Steve Spurrier was mediocre over nine NFL seasons.  Shane Matthews, Danny Wuerffel, Chris Leak, Jesse Palmer, Doug Johnson and my personal favorite (not) Rex Grossman all had the opportunity to play in the NFL, but only Matthews stuck around for a while (13 seasons).  Wuerffel, voted Florida's most outstanding quarterback stuck around the NFL for seven seasons.  Grossman, by the way is a free agent, and will most likely be signed as a backup, a role he may thrive at.

The question is can Tebow play quarterback in the NFL?  I think so.  In addition to his physical gifts (size, strength, speed, arm) he's a natural leader.  He's also a smart kid and a student of the game in the Peyton Manning mold. He's also the son of missionaries and has unimpeachable character, something NFL teams (you know who you are Dallas Cowboys) are desperate for.

If Tebow can adjust his game to the NFL style of offense, he can have a big career.  However, he's a spread quarterback and the spread is very rare in the NFL.

Some have said that Tebow's best chance at NFL glory is either as a running back or tight end.  Some think he can be used as a bigger, stronger, Cordell "Slash" Stewart, but I think he should be given an opportunity to play quarterback.

it will be interesting to see how the draft unfolds.  Sam Bradford of Oklahoma and Matthew Stafford seem to be the most sought after quarterbacks in the draft.  Graham Herral of Texas Tech will also go high. If Mark Sanchez of USC decides to come out he might possibly be a first round pick.  Then you have a drop off to guys like Rhett Bowmar, Mike Teel and John Parker-Wilson.  So if a team was looking for a quarterback, Tebow would be a solid first round pick.

Sometimes the most hyped quarterback is not the best quarterback.  Remember when Alex Smith was drafted first by San Francisco and Aaron Rodgers fell all the way to 24th and landed in the laps of the Packers?  Which QB would you want right now?   Giovanni Carmazzi, Chris Redmond, Tee Martin and mark Bulger were all drafted ahead of Tom Brady in 2000.

The question about Tim Tebow is will he become the next Matt Ryan or the next Tim Couch?
