Samurai Will Do It "The Chicago Way"

When you look at the teams left standing in the 2009 NFL playoffs, you realize how similar at least three of them are.  The Eagles, Steelers and Ravens are teams with strong defenses that like to run the football.  You know, similar to the Super Bowl XX champion Bears in 1986.

New San Francisco head coach Mike Singletary, the middle linebacker on that squad is now trying to design the 49ers in the same mold, pledging to upgrade the offensive line, commit to the running game and build a "nasty" defense.

Singletary has a tough road to hoe as coach of the downtrodden franchise.  For starters, the Niners don't even have a decent quarterback.  In Singletary's scheme, the QB is more of a "game manager" anyway, so a competent veteran who can hand the ball off 35 times a game will suffice.  With the Niners high draft pick, they may be able to pick up one of the outstanding running backs coming out but most likely will settle for a stud defensive player.

Singletary is also fighting the jinx which accompanies hall of fame players as head coaches: Very few succeed.  Singletary was fortunate to play for one who did, some guy named Ditka.

The Niners probably won't take the world by storm next year, but maybe the 2010 season, if Singletary sticks to his plan, keeps his pants on and gets some decent personnel, the 49ers may return to the playoffs.  We'll be rooting for him.
