If the White Sox are Jonesing for a Center Fielder, Why Not Give Andruw a Shot?

I said just yesterday that when in comes to shopping on EBAY, Kenny Williams is a master.  He just turned to the bargain bin Wednesday in signing up right hander Bartolo Colon.  Signing Freddie Garcia may not be out of the picture.  And now, for just the major league minimum, Williams has the chance to possibly solve his center field issue with the acquisition of outfielder Andruw Jones.

This is probably a long shot.  Jones is not the player who helped lead the Braves to all of those divisional titles in the nineties and the early part of this decade.   He's certainly not the player the Dodgers thought that they were getting when they signed him for $36 million before last season.  He may be done, but for minimum wage, why not give the guy a shot.

Jones has been around long enough to have played not for but with Sox manager Ozzie Guillen after Ozzie left the Sox and signed to play for the Braves.  Ozzie may have some interesting input.  The knock on Jones is that he is gifted but doesn't work hard.  Maybe Ozzie can turn that around.

If Jones has a typical Jones year, that will solve a lot of the Sox problems in the outfield.  His running ability, even if it isn't what is used to be, would still compensate for the overall lack of speed in the Sox outfield.  Add his arm to the already strong Sox arms in left and center and perhaps teams will think twice before they take that extra base.  Add his bat to a solid lineup in a hitter's park and maybe he'll improve his horrific numbers from last year.

If I had to choose between Jerry Owens or taking a chance on Andruw Jones in center, the choice is a no brainer.  What would the Sox have to lose.  And more importantly, what would they have to gain?
