Alternatives To Turner Are Not As Good As Turner

Few bears fans have warm feelings for Turner whose offenses, both in his first incarnation during the Wannstedt administration and currently for Lovie Smith have been boring and lacking in creativity. That may be because both coaches emphasize defense first and the spare parts that Turner has left over aren't enough to make it happen. Even Emeril is going to have issues if you hand him two pieces of bread and a piece of bologna and say "here, make me dinner. And be creative"
The other concern Bears fans might have is the Bears inability to hire quality coordinators. You recall Turner's two predecessors, Mr. Shoop and Mr. Shea. Neither of those guys could carry Ron Turner's clipboard. And some other offensive geniuses before and after Turner include Gary Crowton, Matt Cavanaugh and Greg Landry. You'd have to go back to Eddie Hughes in 1987 to find a decent Bears offensive coordinator in the last 25 years. On the defensive side of the ball, it's gotten so bad with defensive coordinator Bob Babich that Lovie Smith will now be calling the plays.
So, by comparison, Turner isn't that bad. And given Jerry and Lovie's penchant for hiring either cheap or totally clueless assistants, there's no telling who the Bears would hire to replace Turner. It might be interesting to see what would happen if Lovie hired his former boss to run the offense, but then again Mike Martz has been unsuccessful in both Detroit and San Fransisco.
Probably Turner will use this whole episode to get a raise and Walt Harris will assist Davewood Bumstedt at Pitt. Gee, I wonder if Wanny can pry Turner away if the "pieces will be in place?"
