Colon and Contreras Look Good, Richard Not So Much
It was a mixed bag of a day Monday for the Chicago White Sox:
- Both Jose Contreras and Bartolo Colon threw 30 pitches from the mound. Reports indicate Contreras looked good, throwing hard and looking like he could start tomorrow. Colon took things a little slower. Kenny Williams cautioned against being overly optimistic, but if Contreras is ready to go opening day, that would be a huge boost to the Sox If things go right, they should pitch in a game March 14 or 15th.
- On the field, the Sox couldn't overcome a five run deficit and lost to Seattle 5-3.
- Clayton Richard, who is competing for the fourth or fifth spot in the rotation, got shelled yesterday by Seattle, allowing four runs and four hits in three innings of work. Richard appears to be one of those pitchers who struggles with consistency, good one outing and lousy the next. Don Cooper needs to get to the root of this and fix it if Richard is going to ever achieve his major league potential.
- Ehren Wasserman (PI) continued his struggles, pitching one inning and giving up two hits and a run. At this early point in spring training, I think it's safe to say that if Wasserman doesn't deliver a couple of shut down innings soon, he may open the season in Charlotte.
- The Sox set up brigade of Scott Linebrink and Octavio Dotel had good outings, with Dotel striking out the side.
- Bobby Jenks pitched an impressive inning. And, yeah, we'll give him props. Even Mike MacUseless had a scoreless inning yesterday.
- Carlos Quentin got his first spring training hit yesterday and scored on a bomb from Jim Thome.
- Josh Fields was 2 for 2 with two doubles. We know he can hit, but how's his defense?
- Gordon Beckham was 0 for 2.
- Here's your possible player from nowhere story: Sergio Santos who has three consecutive hits, including the winning hit on Sunday. I doubt he'll make the team, but stranger things have happened.
