Sox Split: Lights Go Down On Broadway; Sandwich Toasts Another; Big Ben Beats Cubs

Another mixed bag for the White Sox Wednesday after they split a pair of games, losing 7-2 to Oakland, but beating the Cubs 7-6 last night in Vegas.  It's nice to know that half the Sox can beat all of the Cubs, even in spring training.

Some highlights:

  • Lance Broadway pitched two decent innings, but imploded in the third inning surrendering four runs and four hits before being yanked from the game.  Catcher Chris Stewart thinks Broadway "got tired."  True that happens early in the spring, but Broadway better show more endurance if he expects to compete for a chance at a bullpen slot.
  • The Cuban Sandwich hit his second big fly of the spring.  It is rumored that he'll be moving to the outfield after the Sox buy out Jermaine Dye at the end of the season.
  • Brent Lillibridge continues to make noise going three for five against Oakland.
  • Jordan Danks showed John isn't the only Danks brother with talent going two for three.
  • Anyone else concerned that Carlos Quentin is only hitting .091 thus far?
  • Mike MacUseless had another scoreless inning with a walk and two strikeouts.  Smoked Salmon gave up two more runs, therefore compiling an ERA that is the same number as the national debt.
  • Jerry Owens was two for five against the Cubs.
  • Paul Konerko has quietly had a good spring thus far, hitting .417
  • Jayson Nix and Chris Getz both had hits for the Sox yesterday.  On the day, the Sox second basement went five for nine.
  • John Danks looked sharp last night, going three innings, giving up no runs, three hits and fanning four.
  • Aaron Poreda looked average, going three innings, giving up a run on three hits.  Poreda has a great fastball, but unfortunately he can develop a major league caliber second and third pitch, that's all he has.  And it won't take opposing teams long to figure that out.
  • The Sox won the night game against the Cubs on a Ben Broussard walk off single.  It's nice to see him go from a Sox killer to a Cubs killer.
  • The Sox play two today, one in Arizona against the Dodgers and one this afternoon in Vegas against the Cubs.  The Sox-Cubs game will be carried on WGN, so I will get my first look at the Sox this year.  I missed last night's game due to a prior commitment (SLEEP!)
