Ozzie is Bending It On Beckham

Whenever Chicago White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen says anything, most likely something just to get people stirred up, the media just runs with it without any thought whatsoever that Ozzie may be yanking on their chain.

Take Ozzie's recent comments on Sox phenom Gordon Beckham.  Ozzie was saying how impressed he was with Beckham and how he might be in the same discussion with the others in the second base competition, which already is a three man race.  Some reporters took that to mean that Beckham may make the opening day roster.  That would be a shock to anyone and everyone.

Even though Beckham has impressed both with his bat and his glove, it's still spring training.  Many of the pitchers Beckham is facing are at his level, that is young, raw talent just trying to show their wares and get a good placement in the organization.  In Beckham's case, what he is proven is that he is capable of starting the year at Birmingham instead of in Winston Salem.  But in Chicago, nah.

If Chris Getz, Jayson Nix and Brent Lillibridge all can't cut it, there's always Wilson Betemit.

Right now, you'll see a lot of Beckham at second, thanks to a strained quad injury to Nix and Lillibridge coming down with the flu.  Both will most likely be out of action until Wednesday.  That gives Getz a real chance to shine in front of the Sox brass.

Gordon Beckham is goiing to be a good player.  It just won't be at the Major League level until 2010.

Lightning Round:
  • It was an odd numbered start for Clayton Richard, therefore he was good Clayton yesterday.  He has yet to put together back to back solid starts this spring.
  • Welcome back, Mike MacUseless.  His line yesterday:1ip, 2r, 2er, 2bb, 1k, 1hr,  I think the threat is over now.
  • Franklyn German continues to impress with his fourth scoreless outing.  So does Randy Williams with his fifth scoreless outing.
