Beckham Lives Up To The Hype

I told you yesterday about how Gordon Beckham probably wouldn't make the White Sox opening day roster.  While I still believe it, Beckham apparently trying to prove me wrong.

Yesterday against the Dodgers, Beckham had three doubles in a 9-4 win over the Dodgers.  Ozzie was absolutely glowing after the game, saying Beckham's hot start in training camp was fun to watch and giving the kid a chance at making the show "is a decision I love to make.".  Still I can't see it.  Maybe if the Sox didn't have Alexi Ramirez at short or three solid players fighting for second.  Beckham would surely benefit from some time in double and triple a ball where he could hone his skills, learn his new position and come up to the majors making maximum impact.

I refuse to believe that the Sox are that displeased with the performance of Chris Getz, Jayson Nix and Brent Lillibridge that they would let Beckham leap frog over them.  Don't get me wrong, I think Beckham is a player, but I am not convinced he can make an impact just yet.

Unfortunately for the White Sox, their most pressing need is centerfield and anything short of moving the Cuban Missile to center and playing backham at short probably won't do either player a good turn.

Right now, the papers have taken this story and sprinted with it.  Until that is, Bartolo and Jose throw again.

Some other highlights from yesterday:

  • Gavin Floyd looked good, giving up no runs and two walks in four innings.
  • Scott Linebrink got dinged a little bit, giving up three hits, a walk and a run in one inning pitched.
  • Bobby Jenks had another shut out inning
  • Octavio Dotel coughed up another run.  I keep telling myself he'll be ready when he needs to be.  I'm sure Ozzie and Kenny are telling themselves the very same thing.
  • Josh Kroeger picked up another two hits and an RBI.  Ben Broussard also had two hits for the Sox.
  • Sergio Santos has cooled off going oh for three yesterday.
  • It was Donny Lucy's turn to shine yesterday, going two for three while backup catcher competitor Corky Miller went oh for two.  I wish i had more information on the backup catcher competition like who is the best defensively or who the pitchers seem to like.
  • The White Sox get their first spring training look at the Cleveland Indians this afternoon.
