White Sox Send Cuban Sandwich Back To Kitchen For More Seasoning

In a move that surprised no one, the Chicago White Sox sent third baseman Dayan Viciedo (affectionately know as "The Cuban Sandwich") to the minor league camp.  Viciedo will begin the season at AAA Charlotte.

Twelve others were sent out as well including catcher Cole Armstrong and pitcher Jon Link to Charlotte;  Infielder Brandon Allen, pitchers Jhonny Nunez Clevelan Santeliz to Class AA Birmingham and pitchers Ryan Braun, Franklyn German, John Van Benschoten, infielder Javier Castillo, catcher Tyler Flowers and outfielder Being Michael Restovich to minor-league camp.

None of this was earth shattering.  The Cuban Sandwich was third on the depth chart this spring at third behind Josh Fields and Wilson Betemit and, at 19, has a lot to learn offensively, defensively and culturally.  Hopefully there will be someone at Charlotte that can mentor him the way his fellow countrymen Jose Contreras and Alexi Ramirez have in spring training.

None of the other twelve were expected to make the ballclub.  Armstrong had an outside chance, but with the play of Corky Miler and Armstrong's inability to hit this spring, AAA was the best scenario he could hope for.  Flowers, the much ballyhooed catcher of the future, is at least a year if not two away from the show.  Nunez, acquired in the Nick Swisher trade, also is a year or two away for serious roster consideration.  Every one else on the list (save for Braun) is a castoff from another organization who was a non-roster invitee.

The interesting thing is Gordon Beckham is still alive and in the major league camp.

On the field, Pink Gavin Floyd had the gopher ball working, surrendering two bombs in five innings pitched.  Jim Thome returned to the lineup with two hits and Chris Getz had two hits hitting in the two hole.  Gordon Beckham started at short, had no hits and a strikeout in four at bats.

The Sox visit the Giants this afternoon.
