Quick Shots: Coach K Has No Sense Of Humor.
- I'm no lefty, but I found the comments of Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski regarding the President filling out his brackets laughable. Coach K was annoyed the President was filling out his brackets instead of paying attention to the economy. Truth is, by making a public spectacle of filling out his brackets, the President is signaling to the American people that even though the economy sucks, life and sports go on and every once in awhile, you have to let your hair down and have some fun. Coach K should try that sometime. (Deadspin)
- In addition, the President's public bracket posting is a huge promotion for college basketball, not that it needs it. And remember, his brother in law is a college basketball coach. I'm just glad the Prez doesn't dig the MLS.
- Bob Knight has a great idea to stop all the bitter mid-majors of the world (Good morning Creighton) who bitch and moan when they are not selected for the big dance. The General thinks the field should be expanded to 128 teams, which would create one extra game.
- I've been a proponent of the concept of a basketball version of Division 1AA for a long time. This would apply to all non-football schools or non 1A football schools. This would leave more cash for the big boys and create a whole new tournament for the smaller schools, raising the level of competition. Yes, I know this kills all the Cinderella buzz, but outside of Villanova in 1985, when is the last time a Cinderella won a title. And, oh yes, 1985 was a 32 team tourney. If it was a 64 team tourney, Nova probably wouldn't have won the trophy.
- I'm probably the only guy that writes a blog that is not a fan of CBS announcer Gus Johnson. In fact, if I could have a V-chip installed in my TV that would mute the TV every time Johnson speaks, I'd be thrilled to death. Apparently similar feelings must exist in Memphis where Johnson proves quite the diva. (The Big Lead)
- I've always been a fan of the famous Mike Gundy September 2007 rant. When a coach starts out with a brilliant observation like "this was given to me by a mother of children", and brings it to a fever pitch with "I'm a man, I'm 40" you know you are witnessing a classic. As I suggested when it happened, the rant has lived on and has helped Gundy's recruiting because players know he has their back. Unfortunately, the player Gundy was defending, Bobby Reid, would up leaving the program under a cloud. (Wiz of Odds)
- Fox might sell the last year of their BCS contract to ESPN. This is akin to having an animal put out of it's misery. (Sp[orts Media Watch)
- I meant to get to this a few days ago, but I was fascinated by The Chairman's address to the media where he was moaning and groaning about how people aren't coming to his ballpark and how all the team sponsorships will expire next year and blah, blah, blah. Then, you hear out of the other side of his mouth about brining in younger people and reloading, etc. The conclusion you come away with is that these two events are on the same track. The Sox, who will be losing significant revenue when sponsors like US Bank are forced to pull out next year are brining younger, cheaper players into the organization. It also signals the end of the line for Jermaine Dye and Jim Thome who have options up after the season. I like some of the White Sox young talent, but I in no way want to return to 1996.
- Here's a nice piece of satire on the forthcoming autobiography of Brent Musberger. Things I hope Brent writes about: His days in Chicago as an anchor at channel 2, the early days of the NFL Today, his firing at CBS and his exploits in Nebraska. (EDSBS)
- In regards to soccer, you are either for it or against it. I'm against it. So is this guy. (Hugging Harold Reynolds)
