Quick Shots: White Sox Check Colon; Goodbye Gordo; Got Melky?

  • Bartolo Colon had an outstanding performance over 4+ innings yesterday, topping out on the gun at 92mph (if you trust guns.) (South Side Sox)
  • Ozzie Guillen rightfully wants to see Colon repeat this performance before he sips the "Colon is ready" Kool-Aid.
  • Jose Contreras blew the save but got the win yesterday against Oakland.  I think he's ready and should be written in (in ink) as the fourth starter.
  • Spring training phenom Gordon Beckham has been sent to Birmingham (my wife is jealous.)  We covered that here
  • Also sent down to the minor league camp were Aaron Poreda, who will be a starter in Charlotte, Ehren Wasserman (PI), Adam Russell, Ben Broussard and Elder Torres.  None of these guys figured to make the squad this spring.  Poreda was impressive early, but hit a wall.  Wasserman and Russell were horrible during the spring and deserved to get cut.
  • Still alive for a roster spot: Pitchers Jack Egbert and Randy Williams.  I'm really pulling for Williams because it's a nice story.
  • The Yankees have made it known that Melky Cabrera is available.  He's better than any options the Sox have right now as a center field/lead off combination.  Surely, Kenny Williams could package something to interest the Yankees.
  • Scott Merkin of MLB.com spent a little time with lead glove candidate Josh Fields.
  • Everybody does previews this time of year.  There are educated previews of the White Sox done by those of us that really know the team and then there are those that do previews that don't know the team.  This preview even refers to Ozzie Guillen as "a snotty little prick of a manager." It also calls Jerry Owens "scrappy" and awards him the center field job and puts Gavin Floyd as the second starter, Bartolo Colon as the fourth and does not mention Jose Contreras who is more likely to go North at this point than Colon. And, it takes a big shot at A.J., calling him the biggest dick in baseball (gee, I thought that A. Rod.)  If you are a Twinkie fan you'll love it, if you are a Sox fan it will cause a good eye roll.  BTW, there are no White Soxcentric sites listed on their recommended site list.
