Staying Patient Is A Wise Long Term Decision

There's a reason I don't look at the standings until Memorial Day and last night was a prime example: The White Sox wasted a terrific pitching performance by Gavin Floyd, had only three hits and lost 2-0.

Some quick thoughts:
  • Dewayne Wise is obviously feeling pressure and public opinion right now with his 0-8 start.  His biggest failing is not being able to lay down a bunt when asked to.  The big question is can he shake it off or will he fail miserably?
  • For the boo birds, get a life.  It's been two games.  Quit acting like Cub fans.
  • Zack Greinke was tough last night.  The Sox blew a golden opportunity in the second inning when they got the first two men on and then had Paul Konerko rolled into a double play.  But here's the speed aspect of the game kicking the Sox in the pants again: Had it not been Jim Thome on first when Jermaine Dye singled, chances are the runner would have made it to third and scored on the double play.  This is not a shot at Thome, it's an observation that the outcome in a baseball game has many twists and turns.
Now, on the line-up.  I'm all for being patient with Dewayne Wise for the moment.  The guy's sphincter is already tight and the boos and the media coverage aren't helping.  If you yank him too early, you run the risk of losing him for the year and since Kenny Williams isn't going to acquire anyone anytime soon, you need to dance with who brung you.

However if Wise continues to struggle at the top of the lineup, here's what I would do if I were Ozzie.  I would move Chris Getz up to the leadoff spot, Josh Fields to the two hole, Wise to the eighth slot and The Cuban Missile to nine.

I would also consider moving Jim Thome to the three hole, Jermaine Dye to cleanup, AJ to the five hole and Q to the seventh hole if Q continues to struggle.  This gives you a nice righty, lefty balance and disperses the speed a little better.  I know, I'm nuts, but consider it, won't you?

The Sox and Royals wrap it up this afternoon at US Commiskey Park with the Twinkies set to visit over the weekend.

Something From Nothing Dept.: Louis Lazare, who is new to covering the media, makes a big point that more people watched the Cub opener Monday than the Sox opener Tuesday.  At least he points out the Sox having a day game might have had something to do with it.  Not mentioned was the fact many people made plans Monday to enjoy opening day but weren't able change their plans when the opener was delayed until Tuesday.  It's just another cheap shot at the Sox and the continued media bombardment that the Cubs are more popular.  As a Sox fan, I could care less which team is more popular.  I care about what team has won the most playoff games the last four years.  Guess what team that is?
