Quick Shots: White Sox Loud Bats Silence Critics

  • It looks like the White Sox have found their bats.  Maybe the people that were weeping, wailing and gnashing their teeth last week after the loss in Detroit will STFU.  Please, no more about Gordon Beckham until September.
  • Speaking of STFU, Ozzie Guillen should contact Cesar Millan about getting lessons in how to let sleeping dogs lie.  Wouldn't it be great if once, just once, some reporter asked Ozzie a loaded question and he just smiled and said "That's old news.  I've moved on.  Next."  Of course, there's a better chance of Paul Konerko leading the AL in stolen bases than that happening.
  • The White Sox will spend their off day at the White House.  No word on whether the Chairman is going to ask the Sox fan in Chief for stimulus money for a centerfielder. If I'm President Obama, I'd take the book that Hugo Chevez gave me and give it to Ozzie with the inscription "He's your buddy, you read it!."
  • Ozzie need not worry about the Cuban Missile.  After a six week slump last year, he came alive and helped the team to a division title.  As it is, his defense is good enough to keep him in the lineup while he struggles at the plate.
  • According to Rick Telender, Saturday was the first time in 17 years that the Sox, Bulls, Hawks and Cubs won on the same day.  Enjoy it while you can.
  • The Hawks won two incredibly exciting games against Calgary and now move on to Alberta for the next two.  The Hawks need one win in Canada to cement a win in this series.  The fact they won both games late bodes well for their confidence.  I am really enjoying this Hawks playoff run so far, but what I am really excited about is the fact that people are talking about hockey again.
  • I don't talk about the Bulls a whole lot, but I did watch a little bit of their game on Saturday against Boston.  I don't know if they have the goods to take out the Celtics, but Derrick Rose gave me MJ flashbacks.
  • There's a lot of irony in Gary Sheffield's 500th home run.  He hit it against his original team, a team he was thrilled to leave and he hit it in a city where he had starred for the other team in town for several years.  BTW, Saturday's Brewers-Mets game was an awesome pitching duel between Johan Santana and Yovani Gallardo which the Mets won 1-0.
  • What's that they say?  The squeaky wheel gets the gametime changed?
  • Peter King waxes poetic on the departure of John Madden.  While I agree Madden became a cartoon character his last few years, his contributions to broadcasting cannot be understated and the harsh words that people have been remembering him with are totally out of line.
  • Another sure sign of the apocalypse: Celine Dion wants to buy the Montreal Canadians.  I wouldn't let her in the arena to sing the national anthem let alone own the damned team.
  • Heath Bell sounds off on a dirty little secret people in the Midwest have known about for years. (The Big Lead)
  • Is Wrigley Field worth keeping?  At least Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium had some valid memories made our lifetimes. (35th Street Review)
