White Sox Leadoff Spot Getz Cloudy

Chicago White Sox fan love Chris Getz.  He's your classic, prototypical "grinder" that Ozzie and Kenny  brag about.  And the kid does so many things right.  His defense is terrific and he's great at working a count, even if goes down 0-2.  He has, in my opinion solved the Sox problem at the top of the lineup.  Until fate dealt the kid another cruel blow.

Getz is having a solid first month for the Sox.  He's 2nd on the club in batting average, 3rd in OBP, 6th in OPS, 4th in hits and second in doubles.  That's the kind of production you would expect from him and he's delivered.  Unfortunately, he's also getting close to the "if he's healthy" label.

Last year, it was a leg injury that sidelined him through September.  This time, he's got a fracture on the top of his right middle finger.  While the Sox aren't disabling him right away, Getz is out of the lineup indefinitely.  That leaves the weak hitting Brett Lillibridge as Ozzie's only alternative at 2nd base.  For now.

Jayson Nix, who had a big spring but was sidelined by a quad injury is rehabbing at Charlotte.  it should only be a matter of time until Nix gets the call and Getz gets some time to heal.  The big question is will Nix be as effective as Getz?  Probably not.  Which leads us back to the parade that may begin for that spot in the order.  First up is probably Brian Anderson, who is actually hitting his weight and then some.  Then, there is the Cuban Missile (highly unlikely) and possibly Jerry Owens, although you'd be taking PT away from a productive player.  What you most likely will see is Lillibridge get the homestand to get his hitting in order before Nix comes up and gets a shot.

And for those of you calling the post game show and demanding Gordon Beckham, read this.  And please, SHUT UP!

For the moment, while the Sox have a few players capable of playing second (Lillibridge, Wilson Betemet) on the current roster, Getz's injury is a cruel blow at a time where the Sox need to stay with the pack in the AL Central.  Detroit and Kansas City have had solid pitching early on and it should be just a matter of time before the alleged 500 pound gorilla in the division, Cleveland, begins to play better.

You most likely will see Nix come up and Getz take a break sometime in the next week.

Lightning Round
  • Give it up for Jose Contreras.  Maybe he has has groove back.  Now, if Bartolo Colon could get his back.
  • The Sox go from the white hot Blue Jays to the red hot Mariners.  John Danks did not face the M's last year after being roughed up by them in his rookie year.  Ken Griffey Junior probably will get a polite ovation tonight, but nothing close to that opf Joe Crede.  Let's face it, Junior was a rent a player who contributed little to the Sox winning the division last year.  He still deserves the repect he's earned as one of baseball's greats.
  • The Bears got picked up some decent players yesterday, but the highlight of their draft was already a couple of weeks ago when they got Jay Cutler.  That move by itself was much better than any of the quarterbacks drafted in the first round Saturday. Besides, none of these guys are going to mean a damn bit of difference if they are not coached and developed properly.  Or they get injured in the pre-season.  Or they turn into Dan Bauzin.
  • The Hawks try to deliver the knockout blow to the resilient Flames tonight in Canada.  If you live out of market and do not get Comcast, you are screwed again by Versus, who have apparently decided that Hawk games are insignificant.  I guess Versus reasons that the Hawks are only popular in Chicago where they have total TV proliferation and the rest of the country is satisfied with other games.  The game can be seen out of market if you have NHL Center Ice or MLB Extra Innings which shows NHL Center Ice channels. I thought for sure with Detroit and Vancouver ending their series early, the Hawks would be on.  God forbid we should ever forgo bull riding.
