Quick Shots: White Sox See Canadian Sunset

  • Boy, just when you thought it was safe to enjoy a rare game tying home run yesterday, Toronto gets a lead off walk in the bottom of the eighth and sends it around to score the game winning run.  That, my friends is the difference between being first in your division like Toronto or fourth in your division like the Chicago White Sox.
  • The Sox wasted a terrific effort by Clayton Richard, blemished only by a gopher ball served up to Sox killer Kevin Millar.  His defense didn't do him any favors, either.  That's what happens with injuries, you are forced to put infielders in the outfield.
  • The White Sox struggles as summed up by catcher A.J. Pierzynski: "We have guys at the plate trying too hard, and I'm one of them. We've got guys not staying inside of themselves and letting the game come to us. We're trying to force the action." Thank-you Captain Obvious. Let's hope Mark Buehrle brings his "A" game with him tonight.
  • Meanwhile, the Hawks meet the Red Wings in a critical game 2.  The Hawks need a win tonight to at least make a go of it in Chicago.  I believe if they go down two games to none, it's over.  Just keep shooting at Chris Osgood and make him handle the puck.  Good things always come of that.
  • Brett Favre may or may not be consulting with Dr. James Andrews on getting his arm fixed for a possible comeback with Minnesota.  The saddest thing about this is Farve isn't doing it for the love of the game, he's doing it to shove it up Packers' GM Ted Thompson's backside.  Here's a guy, who at one time could have run for Governor of Wisconsin and won in a landslide now being loathed in the very state he was a hero in.  Not a very good legacy for the Elderly Hillbilly if you ask me. (PFT/The Big Lead)
  • ESPN finally got the memo that Tony Kornheiser's act was running thin and did something about it.  I'm not buying Tony's story about the travel.  If he's got a fear of flying, ESPN, being the marketing behemoth they are, could have set him up with Madden's old bus and got a lot of mileage out of it (pun intended.)  Jon Gruden is a bit on the laconic side but has no filter.  I think Matt Millen is waiting in the wings until Chucky gets his next coaching job.
  • Jose Contreras is slowly returning to form, at least at the minor league level.  The optimism is tempered by the fact that the horse may already be long gone from the barn when he returns.
  • It looks like the Bears are going to pass on Plexico Burris and that's okay.  His ability to catch footballs is far outweighed by his baggage.  Let's see how Julio Iglasis does first before we start bringing in the gang that couldn't shoot straight.
  • Is it just me, or is the idea of interleague play getting old?  Even the Sox-Cubs series really doesn't stir me anymore.  I'd much rather see them play each other in post season.  And that doesn't even cover the exciting matchups between Colorado and Seattle or the Yankees and Washington.,  Whoo hoo!
  • Major League Baseball finally realizes kids need to watch the world series in order to become baseball fans.  Also, baseball fans like me who get up at 3am would like to watch a few innings before we go to sleep. On the east coast, the games often run after midnight.
  • Everytime NHL commish Gary Bettman opens his mouth, he just proves how little he gets it.  Here's another painful example. (Awful Announcing)
  • Patrick Roy + NHL coaching gig=DISASTER
  • Finally, how intimidating is Chuck Norris?  Even his cardboard cutout scares people.
