White Sox: The Future Is NOW

Maybe it's a first step.  Maybe it's a blip on the radar.  Maybe it's nothing.  But at least for one night the Chicago White Sox looked like the Chicago White Sox.

Mired in a five game losing streak, the Sox came out and played long ball against pitcher Scott Baker and the Minnesota Twins, riding to victory on a two run bomb by captain Paul Konerko and a solo shot by right fielder Jermaine Dye.  For Sox fans desperate for any signs of life from this team, it was a welcomed and much needed win.

There's all kinds of talk from people who don't follow this team about where the future lies.  Less than a week before baseball's first milepost, Memorial Day, the national pundits are already suggesting Kenny Williams has dusted off the yard sale signs and is ready to plant them on the front lawn to reduce the payroll.  Among some fans, the weeping and wailing for Sox farmhands Gordon Beckham and Aaron Poreda has grown into a talk radio staple.

The Sox are now in a situation where a nice, five, six, or seven game winning streak may ignite them, save the season and catapult them back into the race.  Or, another sustained losing streak may break them apart.

In 2007, White Sox GM Kenny Williams kept waiting for the team to hit.  He was still waiting in September when the Sox were mired in fourth place.  In 2009, Kenny will be nowhere near as patient, especially when he has some movable contracts.  When and if he gives up is probably going to be determined during the next three weeks.  If the Sox respond and start winning, he'll keep the team together because this division is very winnable.  If the Sox continue to slog through the muck, he'll pull the trigger and send several veterans to new and distant locations.

Their fate is in their hands.  If they prove it in the next five series against the Twinkies, Pirates, Angels, Royals and Athletics, they'll be back in the hunt.  If they fail, get swept by the Pirates again, struggle on the coast against Anaheim and  are rendered powerless by Kansas City, it may time to invite Wynonna to come and sing.
