Finally, White Sox Put Big, Crooked Number On The Board. Yes!

To me, eleven of the most beautiful words in the English language are "he looks up, you can put it on the board, YES."  Last night, we heard it twice as both Paul Konerko and Jermaine Dye left the building and the White Sox hung on to beat the Twinkies 7-4.

Honestly, I'm happier about the win than I am that it was a win over the Twinkies.  Wins have not come in abundance to the 2009 White Sox, and if they are going to compete for a title in a weak division where no one will really run away and hide, now is the time to right the ship.  A win this afternoon and some success against the Pirates this weekend are a good first step.

Some positive things to come out of last night's game:
  • John Danks was as good as he's been all year, striking out seven in 5 2/3 innings.  Save for the sixth inning home run surrendered to Michael Cuddyer, Danks was pretty much on all night.  If he can keep it up, it leaves only Pink Floyd as the weak link among the starters.
  • The bullpen was outstanding last night as Dotel, Thornton, Linebrink and Jenks all did their jobs without incident.
  • The Sox finally got some clutch hits, especially from Konerko and Dye.
  • The Sox seven spot in the bottom of the fourth came after the Twins went ahead 2-0 in the top of the inning.  In a lot of games this year, the Sox would have packed it up for the night, but last night they looked like the team we thought they might be.
  • Seven of the Sox starters had a hit in the game.
  • The Sox only left four men on base.
Wrap up time this afternoon at U.S. Commiskey Park with Big, Bad Bartolo Colon going for the sweep.  Colon pitched well in Toronto last time out but was robbed by the bullpen who blew the game late.  Hopefully his tummy feels better and give the Sox at least seven innings.
