Quick Shots: Butt Out, Tom

  • Isn't it amazing how national pundits like Tom Verducci are running to the aid of Jake Peavy based on having seen how many White Sox games?  Verducci says the Sox are old and slow (thank you Captain Obvious) but fails to mention that they are defending division champs and could very well win the division again this year.  He just dismisses them as Peavy did with very little supporting evidence, like the team isn't good enough for Peavy.  Funny, I recall the same conversation about the Brewers during the C.C. Sabathia courting last year.  Truth be told, guys like Verducci, Gammons and Rosenthal have huge territories to cover and focus primarily on the New York teams, the LA teams and Boston.  The White Sox are to them like the Pirates, Twins or Rangers. Just a name on a stat sheet.
  • Kenny Williams has had it and makes that clear in some comments yesterday.  Truth be told, he's trying to rally the troops.
  • What is it with these hillbillys that grow up on the Gulf of Mexico?  First, Brett Favre with his "for now, I'm retired" and now Jake Peavy saying "as of right now, I decided it was better to be here now."  Until the Cubs, Braves or Cardinals come along, right Jake? Yup, there's more than shrimp in that water down there.
  • . Let's hope all the trade talk doesn't effect Clayton Richard.  It's his turn tonight against Pittsburgh.
  • If you are expecting some interesting Ozzie Guillen comments after tonight's game, sorry to disappoint you.
  • If it makes you feel any better about Thursday, the Twinkies put another 11 runs up on the board last night.  Milwaukee is no push over either and prior to last night, their starter Manny Parra was 3-0 against the American League.
  • Despite blowing a 3-0 lead, losing one of their best players and their starting goalie and taking a whole bunch of stupid penalties in the second period, the Blackhawks win in OT 4-3 last night,  Memo to Coach Q: It doesn't matter if you have Tony Esposito in the net, if your defensmen continue to let the Red Wings literally stand in the crease, you'll be on the golf course by Thursday.  Somebody needs to take a whack at Thomas Holmstrom and Dan Cleary to make them understand that there is a price for doing that.
  • If this isn't clearly a case of a GM throwing a coach under the bus to save his own job, nothing is.  Yes, I am defending Mike Keenan here.  I think Mike is probably done as a coach and should consider TV where I think he would be terrific.
  • We've  told you that there was something with ESPN's hiring of Matt Millen connected to Monday Night Football.  Jon Gruden will transition the chair for Millen who probably needs a couple of years to get his cred back with viewers.
  • Speaking of Gruden, is the era of the highly sought, highly paid coach over?  Chances are no.  That's because who ever hires Bill Cowher is going to have a surge in season ticket sales.  Plus, there are always owners like Dan Snyder who want to own a piece of Americana.  And unfortunately, the egos of those coaches are so big, they think they can handle it.  You know, like Big Tuna in Dallas.
  • Drew Rosenhaus says Rex Grossman is not heading to the UFL.  That's because he'd be more successful in the Arena League.
  • It is heartbreaking to see someone with so much potential waste it.  How many of us would love to have had the gifts that Ryan Leaf had, except for the two cent brain.
  • Note to aspiring broadcasters: Want to stay employed?  Learn Spanish.
  • Finally, we come to you today from Wisconsin, where those of you who snuck into our country under a fence are now rewarded with in-state tuition.  This is like rewarding drunk driving violators with a free car and a case of MGD.
