White Sox Brew Up Rally; Buehrle Puts One On The Board, YES!

After yesterday's glorious 5-4 White Sox victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, I ran into a friend who is a Brewers fan.  He started giving me the business about how "lucky" the White Sox were, to which I responded :I'd rather be lucky than good."

There was no luck involved in yesterday's win, just good, grinder baseball.  It takes you back to a few weeks ago when the Sox won 9 out of 12 and you really wanted to drink the kool-aid.  After yesterday, you probably ready to order another pitcher of it or at least a tall glass.

The highlights:
  • Mark Buehrle's first ever home run.  Careerwise, he now has more than Gordon Beckham.
  • Brian Anderson playing centerfield like Torri Hunter.  You may not like what he provides on offense, but BA can pick it with the best of them.
  • A ringing two RBI double from The Savior himself.  Go, Gordie, go!
  • Buzz Lightyear attempting to bunt
  • Solid bullpen work from Dotel, Thornton and Jenks
  • When A.J. Pierzynski came to the plate in the ninth with two on and two out, I looked at Princess and said "he's the best clutch hitter on the team."  Thanks for making me look a genius in front of the wife, A.J.!
Make no mistake, this Brewer team isn't as bad as they look.  They are a talented offensive team (Ozzie Guillen will have Corey Hart nightmares for a month) that has average to below average starting pitching and a below average bullpen.  They will be in contention all year in a National League Central which is similar to the American League Central in that it won't be over until the final week of the season.  You saw how talented they are Friday night.

My takeaway from this series is if these guys can win two out of three against a good team on the road with a lineup devoid of Thome, Dye and the DH, they can win the division.  It just takes a couple of streaks and a sustained stretch of good baseball.  Call me crazy, but I'm not even close to burying them yet.

Lightning Round

  • I don't think Ozzie dislikes Gordon Beckham.  I think Ozzie dislikes the idea he has to play a kid who isn't ready yet when he prefers veterans.  I think Black Jack's comments were a bit premature and perhaps out of sync with reality and I applaud Hawk for at least sticking up for the kid.  Since I live in Wisconsin, I missed all the fun having been relegated to the Brewers broadcast only.
  • One thing Blackjack has conveniently forgotten: When the Sox brought up his class (which included Robin Ventura, Frank Thomas, Blackjack, Alex Fernandez, Wilson Alvarez et. al) the White Sox were such a crappy team that anything those players added was considered a bonus.  The GM at the time, Larry Himes, was committed to rebuilding through the draft and he did a phenomenal job.  White Sox manager Jeff Torborg was hired specifically to work with younger players.  Currently, the Sox are positioned to contend for a division and Beckham has to either pull his weight or let go of the rope.  Ozzie wants to win now and doesn't have the luxury of time and development like the Sox teams did back in '90 and '91.
  • One more comment on Beckham this morning: The one thing about him that has impressed me is that he puts the ball in play. In 35 abs, he's only struck out five times.  Compare that percentage wise to Josh Fields and you'll realize why the Sox are so high on the kid.  He's a contact hitter.
  • I'll be glad when the six games with the Cubs are over simply because I tire easily of all the "Ozzie vs. the Cubs/Cub fans stories" which are written with the express purpose of firing people up.
  • The enemy of my enemy is my friend until Tuesday night when they go back to being my enemy.
  • Say what you want about Ozzie Guillen, but don't ever accuse him of being disloyal to his coaches.  Throwing Gerald Perry under the bus will not solve the Cubs problems unless Milton Bradley was under there with him. Besides, how does a coach who led his team to the top offensive ranking in the league last year suddenly go so stupid so fast?  White Sox fans should recognize his replacement, Von Joshua.  The White Sox fired him once upon a time.
  • Andrew has a cool take on visiting Milwaukee.  And when he says Brewer fans say Sox fans are more polite than Cubs fans, that's a given.  Anyone who knows me will back that claim up!
