Upon Further Review, Scotty Pods Is An All-Star

The all-star game is a couple of weeks away and I was thinking about which one White Sox player should represent the good guys in St. Louis.

I've narrowed it down to four players: Paul Konerko, Mark Buehrle, Bobby Jenks and Scott Podsednik.  Let's look at the arguments:

  • Konerko is having a decent year.  Not a great year, especially in the home run department.  But despite an off year last year, and a bad hand, Paulie has not only been one of the most consistent hitters on the team, his defense has been stellar.  Overall though, I don't think he makes the cut.  Even if he does, he might take the  break off to rest his injured right hand for the stretch drive.
  • Buehrle is also having a decent season, leading the Sox pitching staff with a 6-2 record and a 3.43 era.  I've got to think he's the leader in the clubhouse for all-star consideration this year.
  • Jenks is having an average year for a closer of his stature.  He's got 16 saves, but he also has a 1-2 record and two blown saves.  His era is a (pardon the pun) hefty 3.60.  Joe Nathan, Mariano Rivera and Jonathan Papelbon are all having good years and there may not be enough room for Bobby on the roster.
  • Podsednik is deserving of all-star consideration.  He's hitting .316 with two homers and ten steals and has been the MVP on this team since he joined it.   He deserves to go.
I think White Sox fans should consider writing Podsednik in the same way they wrote in AJ a couple of years ago.   He's really made a difference and kept this team afloat during a tough season.
