Deja Vous All Over Again: Has Kenny Overplayed His Hand Getting Peavy?

I told you this morning never to assume that Kenny Williams couldn't work a deal.  But my question, in the words of Nancy Kerrigan was "whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?"  Why trade for Jake Peavy now?

There are several aspects to this trade I wonder about.  First is Peavy's health. He's been on the DL since June 13th and he's not coming off until almost September..  So, for right now, it's like buying a BMW that's in the shop.  It would have been cheaper and better for Kenny to have gone after say, Doug Davis or Broan Bannister and maybe have held on to either Poreda or Richard.

Second, it is becoming obvious to me that both Kenny Williams and Ozzie Guillen dislike young arms or at least the arms that were provided for them when Duane Shaffer was director of scouting.  I don't know if, at this point, I would have traded Clayton Richard. Poreda, maybe.  Russell definitely.  Carter, again maybe. But, four pitchers for a guy who can't even pitch for a month.  You think that  Kenny could have gotten a conditional discount and added a player if Peavy pitched in so many innings the rest of the year.

Meanwhile, the defense still stinks and the offense can't hit right now.  Nothing changed there.  What did change was the pitching which was the strongest part of this team.  So, let's review:

  • Kenny traded a Chevy, a Toyota and two Hyundais for a BMW that doesn't run.
  • The trade forces the Sox to use D.J. Corrasco tonight, which will tax an already taxed bullpen already missing Bobby Jenks who is out with kidney stones.
  • Peavy comes to the Sox after he told them to kiss his ass earlier this year.  What changed his mind?
  • Given the fact that you will not see Bartolo Colon ever again in a Sox uniform, your starters at this point are Buehrle, Danks. Floyd, Contreras and TBA.
Overall, I'd say that long term this is probably good, especially next year (although you don't have a fifth starter for next year because Contreras isn't going to be back) but short term, this may be the one move too many that hoses any chance the Sox have of winning the division.  In fact, that's exactly what this trade is.
