Quickshots: Even the Joneses Were Jonesing For Peavy

  • Tonight, the Chicago White Sox get back to work against the California Anaheim Angels of  Anaheim, Azuza and Cucamonga.  The Sox have been fairly successful against John Lackey, but with Jose Contreras on the hill, anything is possible.
  • With the off day yesterday, the majority of media outlets wrote about two topics: The acquisition of Jake Peavy and The Savior.  On Peavy, it turns out the minor league team in town was pretty shook up Kenny had the guts to pull the trigger.
  • For his part, Peavy continues to spin how much he wants to pitch for the Sox.  I would think after being on the shelf for two months, he'd be happy to pitch for the Nationals.  I told a friend yesterday that I thought the reason Peavy nixed the deal back in May because he thought the Pods could contend.  When he figured out in July that this wasn't going to happen and the new Pods management wanted to rebuild to save money, they forced his hand and he approved the trade.  So, the big question is when The Chairman orders payroll cuts and the Sox become a middle of the road team, does Peavy demand a trade?  Stay tuned for that.
  • I saw a comment over the weekend somewhere that was commenting on the story of how The Chairman is a bit unhappy to take on Peavy's salary (because he's a pitcher and "no one comes to the ball park to see someone throw a shutout.") The comment was "it's finally good to have a GM who has our (the fans) back.  Amen.
  • The Chairman is probably also annoyed about the $100,000 family clause Peavy demanded before he approved the trade.  Hey Jake, if you don't mind driving in from Waukesha, WI, I have a house I'd be glad to sell you.
  • Meanwhile, on The Savior.  The Cheat says if he continues statistically along the same path, he will join some pretty good company. (South Side Sox)
  • J-Rod writes about the future of the dynamic duo of The Savior and Q.  Note one comment in particular for some additional and brilliant perspective. (Midwest Sports Fans)
  • The White Sox are expecting a Wednesday Missile launch.  If Jayson Nix could just shore up his defense, he's not a bad guy to have in there offensively.
  • I don't know why there are all these bloggers who are writing in defense of Kenny Williams.  The man needs no defense.  All true believers know that Kenny wants to win worse than anyone and has had more success in separating The Chairman from his money than any Sox GM during the Chairman's 28 year reign. (South Side Sox)
  • A judge rules that The Chairman's underhanded tactics may not be used to keep the media out of a cheating scandal.
  • Is there an upside to trading Bobby Jenks for a hand full of magic beans?  (Bleacher Report)
  • You always love to see a guy who has worked his ass off for years at the minor league level finally get a chance in the bigs.  Meet Kevin Cheveldayoff of the Chicago Wolves.  One wonders, as sneaky as John McDonough can be, if Cheveldayoff is being hired because he is the best man for the job of Assistant GM or because his hiring weakens the local competition.  I think the odds are 50/50 on that one.  Still, he deserves the opportunity.
  • Lacking the will to practice and forced into retirement by an aging body, The Elderly Hillbilly proves his jaw still works. His assertion that he doesn't want revenge against Packers GM TedThompson is pure spin.  His disdain for Packer fans who dislike him nowis real, but he earned that disdain by his own self serving actions. Green Bay Packer fans are the most loyal fans in America, but even theycan smell a phony.  For all the love they Farve (including a streetnamed after him) he turned around and acted like a selfish child deniedhis toy when Thompson told him he'd do it his way or hit the highway. Packer fans have discovered over time that Farve was the real villainand Thompson is a hero for refusing to enable him as the prior Packerbrass did.  (Can't Stop The Bleeding)
