Quickshots: Ernie Harwell Won't Be Around Much Longer
- This is very sad news about announcing legend Ernie Harwell. The guy is a class act and second only to Vin Sculley in all-time greatness. I was just thinking the other day, even before I heard this news, about how many of the great announcers of my youth have passed away. Jack Brickhouse. Harry. Vince Lloyd. Lloyd Pettit. All gone. All so much better than we have on the air today. And, that's a qualified, professional opinion, kids.
- Kenny Williams discussed the Thome-Contreras deals yesterday, a day after ESPN's Buster Olney said Kenny had a responsibility to discuss it. Slow news week, Buster or just annoyed Peter Gammons got the interview?
- More on the Sox September call ups. (South Side Sox)
- Our hero and role model is giddy over The Savior. (Rosenblog)
- The Sun-Times has come out with a 2009 all disappointing team. And you left off Jose Contreras and Scott Linebrink because...?
- Da Bears win their pre-season finale over Cleveland but lose Kevin Jones to an ankle injury.
- When it comes to awful, classless owners Jerry Reinsdorf couldn't hold Daniel Snyder's checkbook.
- Andrew Riley opines about Jake Peavy. (Mouthpiece Sports)
- Why are teams firing their OCs in pre-season? It's been some kind of year for Jeff Jagodzinski.
- Some people take things a little too seriously. (Can't Stop The Bleeding)
- The Wall Street Journal recently did a survey as to how much a play by play announcer talks by tracking words per minute. The winner? Vin Sculley at 143.51, but it's okay, I'd listen to him read the phone book. Near the bottom is Hawk Harrelson, largely because he says things like "Yes" and "Mercy". Seriously, the less words the PBP guy says indicates he's deferring to his color guy. In Hawk's case, Stone Pony is a chatty Kathi. In Sculley's case, he works by himself. (Awful Announcing)
