College Football Saturday: Tide Rolls, Sooners Not So Much

The good news for Oklahoma is that they can overcome this and play for a national championship provided they run the table. Losing your first game of the year to a ranked opponent doesn't mean you are out of it, but it does mean that wins over Texas and Oklahoma State are a must. Then there is the whole issue of Bradford and when he might come back again.
BYU on the other hand now has the beginning of the argument that should they run the table, they should play for the BCS championship. You can bet your bottom tax dollar, Senator Orrin hatch and his gang of overzealous legislators will be watching this situation carefully.
For BYU to ascend to the top, they will need lots of help. They'll have to be undefeated this year, plus hope that several of the teams above them lose at least once and that they can position themselves in the top 2. This may be impossible.
Florida looked like Florida in their opener, although they played a cream puff yesterday, Same with Texas and USC. Unfortunately for USC, Ohio State almost proved itself a fraud yesterday, so nothing short of a repeat of last year's disemboweling next week for the Trojans will set them apart from the pack and perhaps move them up a place or two in the polls. That will be tough in the horseshoe, but USC could pull it off.
The most impressive victory yesterday was #5 Alabama over #7 Va. Tech. Even with a new quarterback and a rebuilt offensive line, Bama wore down the Hokies yesterday, earning a ten point win. #9 Oklahoma State was equally as impressive in overcoming the jitters early and taking it to Georgia, 24-10, Georgia's first opening game loss under Mark Richt.
#11 LSU was a lot closer to Washington than they should have been. It is possible that the Tigers are the third best team in the SEC West this year, behind Alabama and Ole Miss, although I refuse to believe the Ole Miss hype. The wildcard in that division is not Auburn, but Arkansas.
The Big Ten is a miserable conference as evidenced by Illinois getting pounded by Missouri and Ohio State almost losing to Navy, Iowa barely holding off NIU (and needing a miracle to do it) and Wisconsin barely holding off Northern Illinois. Penn State is far and away the class team in this outfit. And, don't be fooled by Michigan's big win yesterday. I'd be shocked if they beat Notre Dame next week in the battle of once proud football schools.

Team that should move into the Top 25: Pittsburgh, Tennessee
