College Football Saturday: Oklahoma State Takes It Like A Man; Tortoise Almost Beats Hare

Some thoughts from yesterday:
  • #1 Florida looked every bit as good as advertised despite the fact they were playing a cream puff game against Troy.  Good teams should crush unworthy opponents, which is what the Gators did.  More on UF further down.
  • #2 Texas was a little stiff in the first half, but easily beat Wyoming.  They are the only one of the big three in the Big 12 South to lose an early game, so Mack Brown has little to complain about provided his team runs the table.
  • #3 USC almost lost to #8 Ohio State.  As conservative as Jim Tressell is, Pete Carroll should be very concerned.  Very concerned.  The Tortoise damn near upset the hare again.
  • #4 Alabama gave up 14 first half points to FIU before blanking them in the second half.  The only negative thing you can say about the Tide yesterday is that they didn't cover.
  • #5 OSU spent all that money refurbishing Boone Pickens stadium only to lose to a C-USA Team?  Mike Gundy can kiss cocktails with the man goodbye for now.  More importantly, if OSU wants to go to a BCS bowl, they have to hope Texas and Oklahoma lose twice.  OU maybe, but UT probably not.
  • #7 Penn State cruised over Syracuse, but after watching Ohio State last night, Joe Pa has to be a little concerned.
  • #9 BYU is movin' on up after crushing Tulane.  With Oklahoma State losing, BYU is probably going to move up  one slot.
  • #11 LSU beat Vanderbilt, which is not a big deal.
  • #18 Notre Dame and Michigan in one of the better games of the day and at the end, Michigan got it done.  Charlie Weis might as well start sending out resumes now, he's done.  As for Rich Rod, the future looks bright with Forcier at QB...until they play either Penn or Ohio State.
  • #22 Georgia won a shootout with South Carolina.  I thought the Cocks couldn't play defense.  This could be a long year for Georgia, who is probably thrilled that Oklahoma State lost.
  • #25 Missouri almost coughed one up yesterday to Bowling Green.  They may disappear out of the top 25 for that.
  • Memo to Lane Kiffin: Hey big mouth.  If with all the chest beating and fist pumping and trash talking you can't even beat UCLA, wait until Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow welcome you to the SEC next week.  Somewhere in Knoxville, Phil Fulmer (and perhaps Doug Dickey) are smiling.
  • Michigan State lost to a MAC team?  Even Indiana beats Mac Teams.  And Wisconsin barely survived Fresno State, which is not your Daddy's Fresno State.  Boy, the Big Ten sucks.
  • Pittsburgh trashed Buffalo yesterday.  Ah, Wanny, ah, may have his best team there yet.  Look for them to crack the top 25 this week.
