College Football Saturday: Bama Rocks; Ostrich Maneuver Costs Penn State
Some thoughts from yesterday:

#1 Florida coach Urban Meyer no longer to worry about the flu. Now he has to worry about the birdies flying around quarterback Tim Tebow's head. As luck would have it, the Gators are off next week, so Tebow should have plenty of time to get cleared to play against LSU on October 10th.- #2 Texas beat UTEP 64-7. Think Mack Brown is sending a message (other than MIke Price find a Realtor?)
- #3 Alabama looked impressive in their win over Arkansas. They have a trap game against Kentucky next week before they meet Ole Miss on October 10th.
- If you watched the first five minutes of the game between #5 Penn State and Iowa, you thought it was going to be a Penn State blow out. What with all the babbling by Brent Musberger about last year and revenge and all of that crap. The bottom line is the Nittny Lions went into the rope a dope way too early ( nice call Herbie!) made some costly turnovers and Iowa took advantage. Ohio State now controls their own destiny and that of the Big 10's.
- One week after #6 Cal had been handed the keys to the Pac 10, they get blown out by Oregon. That's going to leave a mark.
- #7 LSU survived a close call in Starkville, but as Milli Vanilli once sang "Blame it on the Rain."
- I hate to say this, but if anyone is going to throw a wrench in the BCS machine, it could be #8 Boise State. They could be ranked as high as fifth later today and with their week schedule and by virtue of the fact that everyone ahead of them has at least one chance to stumble, they could get to the BCS Championship game through the server's entrance. Conversely, if they get treated unfairly, Congress will go crazy. Just mark it down you read it here first.
- The renaissance for #9 Miami is over. #11 Va. Tech showed the Canes that they aren't quite ready for prime time. Va. Tech is one of those one loss teams that can still rise to a BCS game if they run the table.
- #12 USC beat Washington State but not impressively. It may be hard for Pete Carroll's squad to climb higher than 11 this week.
- #13 Ohio State whacked Illinois and should crack the Top Ten this week, leap frogging over USC.
- #14 Cincinnati is playing excellent football. Wouldn't it be something if they stayed undefeated and everyone above them except Boise State lost and they played Boise State for the BCS trophy? You'd have all kinds of network executives jumping out of windows.
- #15 TCU is also quietly putting together a fine season, although Clemson is not very competitive. The Horned Frogs still have BYU and Utah on their schedule, so it appears the MWC is probably out of the BCS sweepstakes this season unless some really strange things happen.
- #16 Oklahoma State enjoyed a resounding victory against Grambling which is basically like fighting a guy in a wheelchair.
- #17 Houston wins some credibility by beating a Big 12 team. If you are looking for Mike Leetch, he's the guy with the puzzled look on his face looking for his offense. Apparently they got lost between the locker room and the field right before the second half.
- #19 BYU looks like they recovered nicely to their loss last week to FSU.
- #20 Kansas survives C-USA entry Southern Mississippi. If you thought that was tough, Kansas, wait until the Big 12 season starts.
