Blogger Joe Isn't A Fan of ESPN

Boy, I thought I was the angriest blogger on the planet lately until I read this from "Coaches Hot Seat".  Poor Joe.  He's gone totally overboard on Boise State and with it, he's attacking  ESPN.

I will admit ESPN drives a lot of the national conversation, but anyone with any sense or perhaps just a basic understanding of the BCS is pretty much resigned to the fact that even if Boise State is the last undefeated team standing, they probably won't get to play in the national championship game based on the BCS criteria.  Strength of schedule is a big deal in the BCS and when you play in the WAC, you simply do not play the quality opponents that Alabama, Florida, USC, Iowa and others play.

It's easy to be Moby Dick in a mud puddle.

No matter how biased Joe thinks ESPN is (and again, he probably has a point there.  After all they got the 1998 Heisman awarded to Charles Woodson) the reality is the BCS is set up to benefit the larger conferences.  Unless we have a playoff system where Boise State can compete on a level playing field with the big boys, we will continue to have this debate.

As it stands now, Florida still has Arkansas, Georgia and FSU to worry about on it's way to the BCS championship game.  Alabama has to go through Tennesee, LSU and Auburn and Texas must lock horns with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Kansas.  Should those three teams stumble, Virginia Tech, it gets by Georgia Tech on Saturday has a very clear path to the big game, and USC still has Notre Dame, Oregon, Oregon State and UCLA standing in its' way.  While there are no guarantees that the top three will stay undefeated (inevitably one of the SEC teams has to lose because if Florida and Bama stay undefeated, they will meet in the SEC Championship game for a winner take all trip to Pasadena) it appears even if all three lose at least one game, Boise State will not have enough juice to get to the big game. That's just the way it is.  Now, if they went 12-0 in the Big 12, that's something.  But 12-0 in the WAC?  Let's get serious.

And besides, the networks would hate to have a BCS Championship game featuring Boise State vs. Cincinnati.  Woo hoo.  Bet that will set ratings records.

Lightning Round
  • My last word on Rush.  My anger in the situation is that Rush was denied an opportunity.  While his critics demand opportunity for themselves, they want to deny Rush a fair opportunity to own part of a football team based on his politics.  If there is one thing that sets me off, it's hypocrisy.
  • Adrian Wajnarowski is a writer for Yahoo who was on Jim Rome the other day.  Here's what he said about Rush: People do not want a bigot as an owner.  He's a racist. He's a bigot. He's shown it for years. He's made his career off in a large way off marginalizing black culture and African-Americans, and now he wants to buy into an industry where 70% of the players, the talent, the work-force is African-American and make money off of it? He doesn't get to do that."  Of course, he offers no evidence of Limbaugh being a bigot.  My favorite part is where he says "he doesn't get to do that" like he is denying a child TV privileges after a tantrum.  And oh, by the way, Adrian, who died and made you king?
  • I don't care if TO comes to the Bears, but I have no idea what the Bears have to offer Buffalo for him.  They've already traded a couple of number ones to Denver in the Cutler deal and keeping their twos and threes will be critical if they want to continue to draft quality skill players. Personally, I can't imagine a player like TO playing for the button down Bears.
