In Defense Of Jeff Fisher

The first time that I met Jeff Fisher on cracked wise at me.  It was on the weekly media day at the Titans training facility and they always set up a big, catered cookout for the media. I was up getting a burger when he walked up behind me in line.  I introduced myself and told him I remember when he was a safety for the Bears.  He smiled and in that dry wit of his said "Then you must be pretty old!"

I covered Fisher and his team from the time they arrived in Tennessee in 1998 until I left Birmingham in 2002.  I interviewed Fisher countless number of times and got to know him fairly well.  His antics yesterday, introducing Tony Dungy in a Colts jersey, were just Fisher being Fisher, trying to break the tension with a little humor.  Although the guy appears really stiff on TV and robotic in press conferences, he is pretty funny when you get him away from the cameras.

I point this out because the word from Nashville is with an 0-6 start, Fisher may be on the hot seat.  Titans owner Bud Adams, a man who does almost everything impulsively, was shocked and outraged with the team's 59-0 ass kicking at the hands of New England Sunday as well as the team's 0-6 start.  He takes it personally, does Bud and at 86, his window to win a Super Bowl is almost nailed shut.

For his part, Fisher can't figure it out either, that is how a 13-3 team from a year ago starts the next season 0-6.  Among the relevant theories:
  • The loss of Albert Haynesworth to free agency.
  • The loss of Jim Schwartz as defensive coordinator
  • The ongoing quarterback controversy between Kerry Collins and Vince Young.
Jeff Fisher has been the Titans coach for 15 years, even before they were the Titans.  He is immensely popular in Nashville from his various charitable works and his successful winning football program.  While the fans are probably annoyed, they probably aren't ready to dump Fisher into the Tennessee River just yet.

For 11 years, the success of Fisher's teams have helped sell tickets in Nashville.  No one was sure when the Titans came to town how they would do, given the college football dominated landscape in the southeast.  But the Titans caught lightning in a bottle in 1999 and were just a few inches from beating the Rams in the Super Bowl.  They've been an AFC power since then, with a couple of down years due to salary cap issues.  But generally, Fisher and his staff have done a good job.

Fisher is also respected by his peers, sitting as a member of the powerful competition committee.

If Bud Adams does dump Fisher at the end of the year (which would be a huge mistake, but I digress) he will find other work quickly.  There will be several coaches out of work after this season and I could see Fisher moving back to Cally replacing
Norv Turner in San Diego.  At very least, he'll be on TV somewhere.  He's too funny and handsome not to be.
