Follow Me To Freedom: The Follow Ups To The Stories We've been Watching
I can honestly tell you that I saw this coming down the street over the weekend when I told a couple of friends of mine that after ESPN dumped Steve Phillips, Phillips would immediately check himself to a clinic for "sex addiction." That's what happens to the rich and powerful when they get busted. Instead of admitting that they are flawed individuals who got themselves into trouble through their senseless acts of stupidity, they check themselves into clinics and claim "I was not myself. I am a victim of a horrible and uncontrollable disease" It's bullcrap. Steve Phillips did, with no prompting, pick up a fat chick and did her repeatedlyengaged in an intimate relationship with a female co-worker. He did that with the full knowledge he was risking his career at ESPN and if he were to get caught, his reputation and his marriage would be damaged as well. It was not an illness or an addiction. It was just dumb. And no number of sessions with a shrink will fix what Steve has done to himself. It's clearly a dodge to help settle his divorce proceedings. By the way, I believe that "sex addiction" in people is a myth 85% of the time and, in the majority of patients, a way to label them with something to explain their stupidity. Yes, I will debate you on that if you'd like.- ESPN has fired Brooke Hundley as well, begging the question will she also be checking into a clinic for something? Anger management perhaps?
- ESPN pleads with it's employees to keep it's dirty laundry off the Internet.
- The next thing we'll probably see is Bob Griese undergoing some kind of sensitivity training, another myth. Bob will sit the next dance out, courtesy of his Juan Pablo Montoya taco comment. I agree with SBB in that this may have been a bit over the top because Griese did apologize a couple of times and no one, at least publicly, has come out and demanded his head (I guess Al and Jesse had a previous engagement.) Since Griese has reduced to non-essential personnel, the third tier Saturday game on cable, it's not that big a deal. I just hate to see it because he's been a good announcer for a lot of years and I'd hate for this to be his broadcast legacy. (Sports By Brooks)
- Last year was the year of the quarterback with Sam Bradford of Oklahoma winning the Heisman Trophy. This year, thanks to Bradford's injured shoulder and Tim Tebow's concussion, Alabama's Mark Ingram, a running back, leads the pack. The question is why isn't Colt McCoy of Texas getting more props? And give me a break with all the Jimmy Clausen talk. If he played for Utah instead of Notre Dame, no one would care. Rank does have it's privilege.
- As we correctly pointed out yesterday, whine all you want about Lovie Smith, but with two years and $11 million left on his contract, Bears fans are stuck with him through 2011.
- The Cuban Sandwich has been taken off the menu at the AFL. It seems he's developed inflammation in his throwing elbow, possibly from excessive use of a fork.
- The Savior gets the MLB version of a Discover card. With all of the accolades he's received so far this post season, one might worry about a sophomore slump. However, I think the kid is really well grounded and won't let any of the props go to his
hairhead.
