College Football Saturday
Some thoughts on what went on yesterday in college football:
Captain Obvious' BCS scenarios: We previously mentioned Alabama, Florida and Texas. If all three run the table into their conference championship games, the SEC winner and Texas will play for the big trophy and render everything moot. If Bama loses to LSU, but beat Florida, that leaves Texas and insert name here. It could be Cincinnati, but the Bearcats still have to play a tough Pitt team. Boise State would be a joke. Iowa may be next in line behind UC, but the best the Big ten has to offer is not the best the SEC has to offer. TCU is an outside possibility, but like Boise State they play no one. So, as of right now, it looks like Florida/Alabama vs. Texas in the big one.
- #1 Florida was impressive beating Georgia, who, honestly isn't that good. But Florida did what you do against average teams and left no doubt.
- #2 Alabama was off and will most likely fall to #3 after Texas manhandled Oklahoma State. They have their biggest game of the year next Saturday against LSU. That game is huge. Texas has an easy four games left with Kansas the only real threat, so they most likely will run the table into the Big 12 Championship game. If LSU wins next week, Alabama would have to beat Florida in Atlanta in December to possibly merit consideration. Could we be looking at a Texas-Cincinnati national championship game? Oh my!
- #4 USC, thanks for playing. Looks like you will be bowling in San Diego this year.
- #5 Cincinnati whipped up on Syracuse with a backup quarterback leading the charge. They are a good team, but certainly not in the ilk of Florida, Texas or Alabama. They will still move up this week because USC soiled itself.
- #6 Boise State beat 45-7 over San Jose State. Try not to act impressed. Boise State is a good team in a pathetically weak conference. Put them in one of the Big 5 and see how they would do.
- #7 Iowa barely survived another upset. But you've got to hand it to these guys, they never quit. Definitely Rose Bowl material, probably against Oregon who will end the happy story by shredding them.
- #8 TCU beat up on hapless UNLV which is like me beating my 86 year-old mother-in-law in the forty yard dash (even if I allow her to use her cane.)
- #9 LSU set the table for Alabama next week beating Tulane. Holy Toledo! Tulane stinks.
- #10 Oregon is going to rise after dismantling the Trojan war machine. How high remains to be seen, but beating USC has got to merit more looks that beating San Jose State, Tulane or UNLV.
- #11 Georgia tech started out slowly but got it going to crush Vandy. Beating the worst team in the SEC is not a big deal, especially when that team is Vanderbilt.
- #12 Penn State took out Northwestern. Joe Pa and company need a win against Ohio State next week and some help from the Buckeyes in two weeks if they want to go to Pasadena. I think that Iowa loss cooked their goose.
- I love watching Houston. They make my neck sore. Their win over Southern Miss was fun to watch, even if it is C-USA.
