Why Isn't Gus Under The Bus

Monday has passed without any word as to what, if anything, CBS plans to do to announcer Gus Johnson after saying Chris Johnson of the Titans possessed "get away from the cops speed."

I can only assume that since Johnson can't be accused of racism, he will get a free pass.

So far, Al and Jesse have no comment.

One wonders what would happen if Johnson worked for ESPN and not CBS, which does not seem offended by Johnson's comments.  I wonder if NFL commish Roger Goodell has any thoughts on the subject.

The deafening silence speaks volumes on the discourse of racism in this country:

  • Ronan Tynan was banned from Yankee Stadium after he made some remarks some thought were racist.  Tynan has since apologized and even made amends, but the Yankees are standing resolute in their desire not to bring the gifted tenor back to sing "God Bless America."
  • Bob Griese made an unfortunate but somewhat accurate remark which got him suspended from ESPN for Saturday's game.
  • Rush Limbaugh made a questionable comment about Donovan McNabb a few years ago and was fired from ESPN.  He also was denied an possible ownership stake in the St. Louis Rams because players felt he was raciest.  Leading the charge to make sure Rush was denied fair opportunity was the Reverend Al Sharpton.
Yet Johnson, who is black, made a remark that smacks of the stereotype of football players running from the cops and will most likely not even get a slap on the wrist.  He will not have to apologize, as both Tynan and Griese have and will not have to suffer a suspension or loss of his job.

Where's the justice in that?
