What's Next For Steve Phillips?

Bob Raissman wrote a pretty scathing piece in the New York Daily News regarding the future employment prospects of former Mets GM and ESPN commentator Steve Phillips.

Raissman is convinced that Phillips is un-hireable due to being fired at ESPN for having an affair with a producer. Raissman says any TV exec that takes a chance on Phillips is sticking out his own neck.

So, basically Bob, you've damned this guy to a lifetime of working at McDonald's because of what?  Because he had consensual sex with a woman that wasn't his wife?  He didn't break any laws, didn't drive drunk, shoot himself with his own gun, kill his driver or train dogs to fight.  He simply used poor judgment.

We'll never know the truth of what happened between Phillips and Brooke Hundley, but suffice to say if the sex is consensual, there is no issue.  And Phillips, just like Michael Vick who committed far more heinous crimes than Phillips ever did, deserves an opportunity at employment.

It's simple Bob.  You sit the guy down before you hire him and make him sign a contract which, in no uncertain terms spells out exactly what his behavior is to be.  If he violates it, he's done, no questions asked.  If Marv Albert and Leonard Little can make comebacks, Phillips can.

If Phillips opinions and sources are deemed valuable to a network, he'll be back.  Maybe not on the level he was, but if I were programming a sports radio station, I'd hire him providing he agreed to a specific code of conduct.

There are so many people who have been in rehab or counseling or whatever that have been given another opportunity.  Steve Phillips is no different from any of them.
