White Sox Add Second Putz To Bullpen

Yeah, I know how it's pronounced.  But it made for a good headline.  And the other putz would be Scott Linebrink.

Why is it with every player the Sox acquire, they come with a built in "if he's healthy" tag?  If Putz is healthy, he'll play the role of Cliff Politte. If he's not, he'll play the role of Mike MacUseless.

In other news:

  • The word is the Sox will non-tender D.J. Carrasco.  They will regret this decision.  Carrasco at least gave them some depth so when Linebrink, Putz and whoever else is injured, Carrasco can step in.  Last year, he was as valuable to the Sox as Luis Vizcaino was in 2005.  The Sox have a way of discounting those roles.  It looks like Carassco's role will be taken by Daniel Hudson until Freddie Garcia breaks down and he has to be moved to the starting rotation.
  • The Sox seem to be hot after Brett Gardner of the Yankees.  He's another guy that could out to be a boom or a bust.  The Yankees certainly need to shed some outfielders, but the question is what is the price for him and what does Kenny have left to deal.  Certainly this would be for non-roster minor league guys, maybe a C.J. Retherford or a low minor league pitcher.  I can't imagine Kenny trading any of the big boys or one his starters to the Yankees for an unproven kid. The Yankees are shaky at catcher, so the possibility exists there could be one involved.  The Sox have two young catchers in the pipeline not named Flowers: Miguel Gonzalez and Josh Phegley.  Gonzalez is a decent prospect, Phegley is struggling to make the transition from college to pro.  Neither one is ready for the bigs at this point and the Yankees prefer to have their players developed.
  •  The Sun-Times had a conversation with Kenny Williams who went to great lengths to say nice things about Milton Bradley.  I hope that Kenny isn't thinking about taking the monkey off the Cubs back.  Even if the Cubs pay for most of his contract, Milton Bradley is clubhouse poison and would not be a good fit at U.S. Commiskey Park.  Besides, Kenny would be doing the Cubs a favor and no one wants to see that happen.
