Urban Migration: Meyer Decides Stay, Get Healthy First

Meyer should look no further than former Wake Forest basketball coach Skip Prosser and former Northwestern football coach Randy Walker to be gravely concerned. Both men suddenly died of heart attacks at the height of their careers. Given the health issues Meyer may be facing (he refused to be specific) most men would turn around and run. But somewhere between practice yesterday and Jeremy Foley's arm twisting, Meyer recanted the resignation, opting for a leave of absence.
Meyer even said he hopes to be back on the sideline this fall.
So, to review, Meyer will hand the keys to the Porsche over to an assistant for recruiting and the spring season while he undergoes what ever procedure is necessary to make him well. Again, without fessing up to anything, it's hard to know what it is Meyer is about to put himself through. It could be anything from rest to a quadruple bypass.
It's hopeful that whatever course he is taking, Meyer will return to work healthy. He's a devout man and an outstanding coach. His health issues are enough to scare his family and him into doing something before the something does him. In his press conference yesterday, it almost sounded like a family intervention took place on Christmas day with enough concern to initially get the coach to walk away.
In the end, Florida is banking that Meyer will return healthy and is rewarding him for his success by keeping his job open while he addresses his personal issues. It must be nice to work for someone like that.
