Tubs Has Big Shoes To Fill

I first encountered Tommy Tuberville when he was the head coach at Ole Miss.  We were a small, start up sports outfit in Nashville and we called him prior to the Vandy game. Not only did he make himself available, he gave us his home and cell number and said "call me anytime."  I've met few coaches who are that happy to talk to us.

When I was in Birmingham, Tuberville was a frequent guest on our show.  He, unlike the current regime at Alabama, made all of his assistants available to us whether it was on or off the air.  Hear an Auburn rumor?  Call Tuberville or one of his assistants to get the story.  We had a fantastic relationship with all of the Auburn coaches.

So, when I say I really like Tommy Tuberville, I mean it.

I wish him the best at Texas Tech.  I wish him a lot of luck because he is going to need it.  It's one thing to take over a dormant program like Virginia but it's clearly another taking over a program like Cincinnati or Texas Tech.  These are programs with the imprint of their creator, in the case of Texas Tech, Mike Leach.  Tech fans have certain expectations and those expectations will need to be met to satisfy their rabid fans.

Tommy Tuberville went to Ole Miss and Auburn when the programs were in disarray, corrected them and made them better.  here, nothing needs correcting.  It needs enhancing.  Whether he is the man to do that remains to be seen, but I hope so.  Good guys need not finish last.
