Bears Fans Hope Lovie Volunteers

The Tribune reports this morning that the University of Tennessee has offered a lifeline to embattled Bears head coach Lovie Smith.  Lovie was an assistant at UT in the early 90's so he obviously understands the tradition and passion of UT football.

The Trib also says Lovie said "no thanks."

Lovie, are you nuts?

UT offers Lovie many benefits:
  • A chance to pit his brilliant coaching skills against some of the top coaches in college football including Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Les Miles, Mark Richt, Steve Spurrier and Houston Nutt.  That's a more impressive array than competing against slugs like Mike McCarthy, Jim Schwartz and Brad Childress, none of which can touch the success any of those guys has had.
  • A long term deal similar to what he's being paid in Chicago.  He'd be safe, rich and happy for at least five years rather than fired after one.
  • As much control of the program as he wants with no interference from Jerry Angelo and Ted Phillips.  Especially Ted Phillips.
  • Immediate warm and fuzzies.  UT fans will love anyone not named Lane Kiffin right now.
  • Better weather.
Call me crazy, but this seems like a great deal for Lovie, and perhaps a better deal for the Bears. In fact, I've heard several bears fans would show their respect for Lovie by personally driving him and Bob Babbich to the airport.
