Quickshots: White Sox Need Bigger Committee
- Count me in as one of those on the sign Jim Thome bandwagon. It's not an emotional thing, it's a practical thing. The DH by committee thing would work if there was a decent committee. No one knows what kind of year you are going to get out of Andruw Jones or Omar Vizquel and in Omar's case, he should only be handed a glove, not a bat. Thome is available, wants to play for the Sox and is affordable. Plus, behind the scenes, the Chairman is pushing for him because "people come to see players hit home runs." Ozzie, quit over thinking it and bring back Thome now or in September he'll kill you as a member of the Twins or Tigers.
- New White Sox left fielder Juan Pierre talks about his previous experience with Chicago fans. Memo to Juan: Those weren't Chicago fans, they were Cub fans. Big difference.
- What have both Northern Illinois University and the Denver Broncos been able to do that the Chicago Bears have not? Hire assistant coaches. Is there not now anyone convinced that most coaches view a job with the Bears as career poison? Except for Mike Martz of course. And possibly any other coach who hasn't worked in a while.
- Speaking of destinations that coaches don't want to go, it looks like Al Davis has kept his Cable.
- So much for the perception that Antti Niemi cures all. He was yanked in a 5-1 loss last night to Vancouver after giving up three goals in the first period. So, let's review the last three games. Loss to Ottawa. Win over Calgary. Loss to Vancouver. Except Ottawa and Vancouver are playoff teams and Calgary is not. The Hawks can take all the shots they want at Jeremy Roenick, but the fact remains their goaltending could get them in trouble in the playoffs.
- Mike Freeman is one of those writers that thinks the media has certain entitlements. His latest column paints a picture of Saints coach Sean Payton as Captain Queeg. Truth is, Payton learned his craft under Bill Parcells. Connect those dots. Secondly, it has been my experience that coaches do not ban writers, media directors do. So Freeman's gripe should be with the Saints media department and not Payton.
- Tom Hicks has agreed to sell the Texas Rangers to a group that includes former
MetsAngels,Astros, Rangers star Nolan Ryan. The talks had broken down until Ryan grabbed Hicks and gave him a noogie. - I don't know what kind of music Urban Meyer likes, but I would not be surprised if his favorite band was "The Clash."
- The East beats the West in a final minute touchdown thrown by Northwestern's Mike Kafka. Who called the winning play? Former Bears quarterback coach Pep Hamilton.
- Apparently the Tigers do not have the same off season conditioning program the White Sox do.
- Who would you rather work for? Lovie Smith or Mike Garrett?. Nice to know Mike has your back.
- One of the dumbest marketing ideas in the history of sports has mercifully come to an end.
