Super Bowl No Fun With No Dog In Hunt

When Brett Favre threw his game changing interception late in last night's Vikings-Saints game, it's too bad Fox didn't cut to he box of NFL commish Roger Goodell.  I'm fairly confident the scene would have been one of the big man locked in a face palm, knowing that most likely his and his league's dream Super Bowl matchup had evaporated into the Bayou air of New Orleans.

For the NFL, the perfect Super Bowl setup was Manning vs. Favre, new school vs. old school, Mr. Preparation vs. Mr. Draw it Up In The Sand.  Two hall of fame quarterbacks couldn't be much more different. And, with each of these quarterbacks there is a certain element of love them or hate them.  You either love Peyton's "aw shucks" demeanor and ability to will victories or you don't.  You either love Favre pulling plays out his butt or you don't.  It was to be a Super Bowl where the quarterbacks out headlined the teams and the notion of Peyton winning a second big game vs. Favre winning a second big game and riding off into the sunset on his John Deere.

Unfortunately for Goodell and the rest of us, it's not to be.

Instead, it's the Colts vs. the Saints in a matchup of two of the NFL's smaller TV markets.

What's to like about the Colts?  Manning and his high powered offense.  What's not to like?  The fact that they are from Indianapolis, a city that doesn't deserve an NFL team let alone a Super Bowl trophy.   And, my ex-wife is a big fan.  That's enough to turn me against anyone. That and they beat the Bears in Super Bowl XLI.

What's to like about New Orleans? Drew Breese and the Saints offense. Reggie Bush and his play making skills.  Jonathan Villma, a great linebacker.  And, the years of torment, bad teams and disappointments of the Saints fans.  Last year it was the Cardinals overcoming adversity and years of denial, now it's the Saints turn.  What's not to like?  New Orleans already has plenty to party about, a Super Bowl victory would likely result in the locals burning the town to the ground.  And just after they rebuilt it, too.

Really though, I was hoping for Favre vs. Peyton.  This matchup really doesn't interest me.  Maybe I'll root for the Who.
