Martz May Be Last Man Standing

It's come down to Mike Martz as the most logical candidate for the Bears vacant offensive coordinator position.  Martz meets the two criteria to fill the job: he's available and he doesn't care if the gig lasts only a year.

But wait, there's more.  Apparently, the reason the bears are finally getting around to the guy who stood up first and proclaimed his candidacy is that they have run out of candidates.  Coaches who were interviewed for the job bolted Halas Hall faster than Brian Urlacher at a paternity hearing.  And Martz, by attrition, becomes the last man standing.

Don't look now, but this may have been the plan all along.  There are some who believe that Bears coach Lovie Smith wanted Martz from the beginning, but was denied by GM Jerry Angelo.  After conversations with several coaches on several teams, the Bears have come up empty and Martz may be the only face saving alternative.  It also means Lovie gets his way.

The bottom line here is Martz is wrong for this job on many levels, beginning with the fact he's a polarizing personality.  He's also not a fan of Bears QB Jay Cutler and has said some damning things about him on the NFL Network, a fact that probably has Cutler's agent scrambling for YOU TUBE right now.

If Martz were that great a coordinator, don't you think someone would have grabbed him by now?  Anyone?

In some cases, your first choice is not always your best choice, but in this case, any choice involving Martz is sure to end in disaster.  And, I guess if you are a Bear fan, and you dislike Lovie, you realize that after a year of Martz, Lovie will be gone too.  So, maybe it isn't such a bad move after all.
