New Big Ten Math A Bit Fuzzy
The hot rumor this morning is that Pitt will become the twelfth Big Ten team, leaving the Big East. I think this is great for the conference as Pitt has a quality basketball program and gives me more opportunities to mock Dave Wannstedt on TV. If it's true, this is a good thing.
I'm trying to do the math on how the divisions will break down if Pitt comes to the Big Ten. In order to keep rivals together, OSU and Michigan and Indiana and Purdue have to be in the same division. Since Pitt and Penn State would be the furthest teams to the East, those six teams would be the Big Ten East,
That would leave Michigan State, Iowa, Illinois, Northwestern, Minnesota, and Wisconsin in the West.
A North and South wouldn't work as Michigan and OSU would be in separate divisions. A North division might be Penn State, Pitt, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Michigan State while the South would be comprised of Indiana, Purdue, Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern and Ohio State.
I think I like East-West better.
