Scott Boras Makes More Friends

I suppose I'm taking him literally, but given super agent Scott Boras' recent comments regarding the possibility of Johnny Damon joining the Detroit Tigers, I would be really angry if I were with the Tigers organization.

"Johnny believes the addition of him to Detroit's lineup would make the Tigers a winner", Boras said during a phone conference.

So, taken literally, it is Boras' position that the Tigers are incapable of winning without Johnny Damon.  In fact, even more literally, the Tigers are losers without Johnny Damon and only the addition of Johnny Damon can make them winners.

There is a sales principle which I am very fond of called FUD-Fear, uncertainty and doubt.  The object is to convince the customer that without purchasing the product/policy whatever, you will suffer dire consequences.  In this case, should the customer (the Tigers) not sign Damon, they will not win.

This is exactly why Boras is able to pants so many teams with long term, overpriced contracts.  He stares them down and then says "Hey, it's your call.  If you don't want my client, there are seven teams who do who obviously want to win worse than you do."

Think what you want about Boras, but he's probably the best salesman this side of Blake in "Glengarry-Glen Ross."  A little more fear, uncertainty and doubt and Damon will be a Tiger sooner than you can say "old English D."
